I gotta Samsung SH-S202J Dvd burner that only burns on 1X....I have latest firmware, Tried Verbatim 16X and Sony 16X...Same results, 1 hour dvd burns with nero...All was fine till 2 days ago? Any help would be appreciated.
Uninstall the burner, in Device Manager, reboot, and see if the problem goes away. If that doesn't work, uninstall the Secondary Ide ATA/ATAPI controller, reboot again, and see if, in the Avanced settings, if it is set to Ultra DMA Mode 2 (or 4).
Thanks for the reply...I uninstalled and that didnt work, I uninstalled the secondary ide and rebooted, I dont have anything there(Not Applicable) under current transfer mode. Says Mode 5 on device 0 and Mode 2 on devive 1 on primary Ide Channel. Tried cable select and master and slave still same...Maybe just a bad drive?.. Newegg 3 weeks old
The Mode 5 is your hard drive, and the Mode 2 is whatever you have on the same ribbon cable as your hard drive. Your burner is connected to that cable, it would appear, and it is running properly. What DVD media are your burning to?
Im burning to Verbatim 16x dvd-r...My hard drive is SATA, I have 2 burners on the cable, Both Samsungs Sh-s202j's except one burns at 18x and the other at 1x...Tried swithing on the ribben and same result...Also tried some leftover ridata 12x ....same result?
No I suspect it IS NOT "just a bad drive" UNLESS you mean possibly bad by DESIGN. I have a Samsung SH-S202G that is doing the SAME thing. Now this might be interesting, mine was just fine initially being fed exclusively -R media. Then I got a wild hair and decided to see if would be OK with +Rmedia, which it WAS, burned the +R 8X Verbatum at something like 9X, faster than NERO had projected. And the burn play-tested just fine. OK, cool. BUT THEN, the next time I tried giving it a -R again, 1X, 55 minute burn. First thing I did was uninstall the drive in Dev-MGR, I haven't tried the CONTROLER but based on the other guys experience I don't have much hope. Nor have I tried a FIRMWARE update but since that was a bust for him also, again.... My solution is going to be a runaway. Have only 2 of my 4 SATA slots in use and a spare new, SATA burner, so I'm just going to slap that in and hope if I intall the 202 under another M0BO/chipset it will be OK. Possible useful suggestion: If you already have the "bug", whatever it's cause, anyway, try giving the drive a +R disk. I have yet to test this yet. seems like a "nothing to lose" to me!
Tested the "+R vs -R" theory. There is a mild preference (for this SH-S202) for the +R. For whatever has "soured" our 202's, mine is burning -R media at 1X (1hour), and +R media at 2X (30 mins). That was were things were at last. I've since changed out the drive for a SATA LG burner and am hoping the next machine/whatever I put the SAM 202 into next the problem will not manifest.
I am having the exact same problem, I bought the SH-S202J only a few days ago on Newegg, had a flawless install, using Nero 7 Ultra Edition, and even with the write speed set to max, 16x, 8x, etc, the write eta is always the same length as it would take for me to watch what I am burning. It still burns fine, but this is annoying regardless. I would be extremely thankful if someone could come up with a solution. I shot an e-mail to Samsung (their firmware downloads are missing the bin file for some reason, so I can't test to see if firmware is my trouble) and will pass on any reply I might get from them, but at the moment I am considering just getting a new drive since many other people seem to be having the same trouble and no solution seems to be in sight. Please keep me posted, friends.
