I want to get a satellite dish that will show english premier league games in English at the weekends and champions league games in english also. La Liga would be a bonus but I can do without.

sorry just started reading about this, would anyone have a link to info on this or if anyone can answer questions below it would be great

I need to get an 80cm dish and receiver?

is it better to have motorized one or is there a difference ?

do i need to purchase a card? if so what card is best for the above games?

    thanks very much

sky have all you need but for a basic package plus the sports channels you would pay around €45- €50 a month ,of course you will need to get a sky dish and sky digibox installed. they have special offers all the time for new customers(like a free dish and digibox installed if you take various packages for 1 year). you could get premier league and champions league from a different satellite called hotbird by getting a dish and a suitable decoder and card for packages on hotbird(but they are intended for use in europe and so channels may not allways be in english, that said a vast amount of programming is in english)and package prices are varied but they are lower than sky(that said sky offer more channels)you will have likely seen these channels if you ever watched saturday football in a pub.you could buy a box online that would give you a lot of these channels on hotbird(but it would not be a paid for service as the 2 options above, and you could lose your channels, and would have no gaurantee that your channels would work all the time)the box is called protek, if you buy a satellite tv magazine such as what satellite you would find info regarding this box and others and also lots of helpfull information regarding what system to buy. motorised is a good way to go and gives you a lot more options in terms of satellites and channels to choose from(but i feel you can get everything you need from eurobird(thats sky)astra 1 and hotbird, you could get a system that incorporates all 3)motorised will cost a lot more to purchase and install and as it has moving parts will need regular servicing. card options depend on which satellite you choose for eurobird you need a sky card, for hotbird you have a few options such as an absat card or canal plus card, art card and more, for astra 1 you have much the same providers.the easiest option for a newbie might be the sky tv route.i hope this helped a little.

Pio thanks very much for your detailed response. A friend mentioned something about getting a linux box up and running and sharing a subscription, would you or does anyone know much about this?

i wouldnt mind the hassle as I work in IT and can pick these things up fairly quickly, I just want the cheapest way possible of watching the football, couldnt give a monkeys about the other channells!

Give satworld a call in Kimmage, they deal with all foreign boxes and motorised dishes. I rang them there a while ago to enquire about it and they said it would roughly cost about 400 euro incl installation. ph 014924011.
