OK I’ve searched and searched all about DMA and burning problems but I’m still concerned that my SATA hardrive has slowed down after I fixed the burning problem I had. My DVD/RW died, it was my first one, 6yrs old, Pioneer that didn’t impress me much as I didn’t even burn with it much so I purchased a new ASUSDRW-2014L1 drive with Nero 7 and installed it. Then I had a problem with burning an audio CD and after a quick search I saw all about DMA issues. DMA was not enabled on the new DVD/RW drive so I changed it in Device Manager and it now says UDMA 4 but no luck, still wouldn’t burn, so I completely uninstalled Nero with the CleanTool and reinstalled it and problem solved. BUT now my SATA drive seams to have slowed down, especially when you select any sort of media file, not documents. Just highlighting a selection of files causes the CPU to max 100% in Task Manager (it drops right back down again) and the mouse cursor gets all jerky?
I have 3 HDD’s 2 raptors in RAID with OS installed and one Seagate SATA (which I've been burning audio files from) plugged into my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboards SATA ports. Nero log files say that the DVD/RW is DMA=On but HDD’s =Off. Is this just a coincidence or what?
OS is Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with ALL updates installed and .NET framework packs etc. AVG Antivirus and Sysclean tool report no virus. I don’t burn much audio but the occasional TV program to DVD but I do copy DVD’s to HDD for viewing in MCE.
Also after looking at many other peoples posted log files I too don’t have the Nero ASPI file path listing at the top, not sure what that’s all about.
Your help would be much appreciated thanks.
    Cheers,
    Simon.

I am experiencing something like this on my notebook w/ Nero 8.3.13.0 and a Pioneer SATA DVD DL writer. I cannot find where it displays the DMA current set but I feel it gets dropped down quick and no PAI because it gets dropped out of the system all together. What is the DMA issue speciffically you guys are having?

Sata drives don't show as dma enabled in device manager, they show ultra 6.In your bios should be an option that shows sata 150 enabled.

    killalot,

Yes your're correct so I’ve downloaded HD Tune ...

Here's the benchtest results from HD Tune ....

HDD: Seagate ST3160827AS (160 GB) NTFS
    Transfer Rate
    Min: 28.0 MB/sec
    Max: 56.8 MB/sec
    Avg: 45.9 MB/sec

    Access Time: 13.0 ms
    Burst Rate: 109.3 MB/sec
    CPU Usage: 10.1%

    Here's the info ...
    Standard: ATA/ATAPI-6 - SATA I
Supported: UDMA Mode 6 (Ultra ATA/133)
Active: UDMA Mode 6 (Ultra ATA/133)
    Buffer: 9192 KB

This is the extra drive I've got plugged into SATA port4 that I'm burning the audio files (mp3) from but my system drives are two Raptors in Nvidia RAID, HD Tune doesn't show the DMA and there’s 25 GB space free.

Would you believe it I tried to burn an audio CD today and Nero didn't finish. "Could Not Perform End Of disk-at-once"! and I thought I'd fixed this problem. I haven't changed any Nero Options but to burn at 8x which is the slowest it will show and finalize and verify disk. I'm burning 77mins though on an 80min disk which I usually do with no problems in the past. I'm using Imation CD-R "Music" 80min CD's.

To cut this thing short ... here's the first part of the Nero log ...

Like I said in my original post after searching and looking at other people’s logs what’s this ASPI business? Some people have the path to Nero at the top of the log file and some don't, like me. Is it the version of Nero you use...?

Once again any help would be much appreciated thanks.
    Cheers,
    Simon.

This error is usally related to the media, poor brand gives poor results. What brand are the disk's you are using?

Also is your burner plugged in to the raid sata port on your motherboard?

Just noticed your burner isn't sata.Sata hardrives,DVD burners, always show as dma as being off, reason for this is you cant turn it off or on because its on already. If the sata device has trouble reading from memory for what ever reason, the device will slow down to compensate,it doesn't turn dma off on the device it cant its always on.My asus motherboard had problems with sata devices, found out the problem was the motherboard chipset drivers.Uninstall you NVIDIA chipset drivers in ad and remove programs and just try the windows base drivers.

I take it back about sata drives as always showing dma as being off, just found this Nero log out both the MAXTOR hardives are sata, suppose it all depends on what version of nero you are using and your bios setup. You still cant turn it off or on,like i said its on already.

    Killalot,

Firstly thanks for the reply. My ASUS DRW-2014L1 drive is plugged into the Primary IDE channel; master with an 80 ribbon cable, the secondary channel is not used. In Device Manager it says it uses the Primary IDE Channel, UDMA Mode 4, Port 0 with Microsoft driver ver 5.1.2600.2180 01/Jul/01. The sata drive uses the NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller with Nvidia driver ver 10.3.0.42 18/Aug/08 now that I’ve updated it please see below.

I'm using Imation CD-R "Music" 80min CD's aren’t these supposed to be on par with Verbatim? The first thing I did was change from using TDK. I’ve used Nero InfoTool4 to read the Imation disk and it says the manufacturer ID is CMC Magnetics. I also have Sony SUPREMAS Technology CD-R 700MB 48x and NeroInfoTool4 says manufacturer ID is Sony. I also have Verbatim CD-R 700MB 52x 80min and NeroInfoTool4 says manufacturer ID is CMC Magnetics! I’ve tried them all with the same result!

I know what you mean about DMA showing as OFF or ON. Do you think it’s whether people are using Windows drivers or Nvidia’s or like you said version of Nero but with regards to the Nero log you’ve posted it may be that there sata drive in plugged into an IDE port instead of a sata one, correct me if I’m wrong or in an IDE setup? Anyway HD Tune says mine are UDMA Mode 6 (Ultra ATA/133).

I’d prefer to try other things before reverting to Windows drivers instead of Nvidia’s so I’ve updated to the latest Nvidia drivers, downloaded from there website version “15.23_nforce_winxp32_international_whql” and the listings has changed a little in Device Manager. i.e. under Disk Drives they are now listed as “SCSI Disk Device” instead of just the model number and under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers it now says “DMA Mode” instead of “1.5G Sata 1”
Another change that has happened is that on the notification on the task bar when I click on the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon is no longer show the sata drives.

I tried the exact same audio compilation and Nero didn’t stop with “Could Not Perform End Of Disk-at-Once” error but instead it said “Burn Completed Successfully at 8x” and then verification failed and the disk is unplayable.

After reading more threads I found people with Nvidia chipsets have removed the SM Bus driver and had results. So I tried this leaving a yellow explanation mark in Device Manager but it didn’t make any difference either.
I found a new firmware update for my Asus drive, from ver1.00 to ver1.01 but this didn’t make any difference either.

I’ve been having trouble trying to revert to the Microsoft drivers as Windows will automatically reinstall them at boot up?
My Leadtek Geforce 6800 Ultra graphics card driver is rather old. Would this have anything to do with it?
And I still feel that the SATA drive is slow or slower than before I installed the new Asus drive and Nero7.
BTW I can burn DVD’s at 4x (I’ve always used this speed) with NeroVision no problems at all. Good quality too.

Just for the fun of it I installed Nero7 on my mother’s old Compaq Laptop, an Intel 1Gig CPU, 256MB Ram and IDE drive and it burned at 8x successfully with the Imation CD-R “Music” 80min CD and noticeably the verification was reading 4-5 times faster and completed successfully too!

Once again any help from where to go from here would be much appreciated thanks.
    Regards,
    Simon.

The log i posted is 1 of mine and they are Sata drives plugged into sata ports, not ide,you cant plug sata devices in ide ports, well you can if you buy 1 of those adapters. What version of nero are you using? i know its nero 7 but whats the full version number. Is it only audio cd's you cant do? if so give this a try so we can rule out nero as the problem.

I figured you can’t plug a sata drive into an IDE port but many people have said they run there sata drive in an IDE setup? I don’t know, that’s why I asked you.
I’ve checked my sata drive model ST3160827AS and its NOT one of those needing a firmware update.
As I have already said I installed Nero from the OEM cd that came with the new Asus drive and then updated to Nero version 7.11.10.0 from the Nero website. Is there another number you want? And like I said I tried the exact same Nero version on another computer with NO sata drive and it worked perfectly.
As I have already said I can burn DVD’s NO problem.
You want me to install another application? Why don’t I just try burning an audio cd in MCE or Media Player?
    Cheers,
    Simon.

Try burning a audio CD with media player and see if it works.
