    Hello,

    I have a

    - ASUS A8V with WD 200GB HD which is connected to a SATA port on the MOBO. Windows XP.
    - Just bought a WD Caviar 1TB HD SATA and a NEXSTAR 3 VANTEC ENCLOSURE. I used the eSATA bracket it came with and connected to the empty SATA port on the MOBO.
    - When turned on once logged in computer slows down/lags to a stop. And XP cannot recognized and BIOS does not recognize.

    I tried
    - USB connection WORKS, drive now partioned and formatted. XP recognized. But want to use eSATA.
    - Turned on the new externalHD and turn on computer. Does not log in to windows when esata connected.
    - Enabled most of BIOS stuff relating to SATA. I think.
    - Re-flashed/updated BIOS still not recognized. by BIOS and XP.
    - SATA port works on the MOBO b/c i switched my internal to the other SATA port.
    - Connected directly without my internalHD - HARDWARE INITIATE FAILED is what it said.

Do I need to buy a PCI Card with esata support or can I do something else.

Advance Thanks. Hope this is the right thread.

    sorry forgot to ADD.

Tried on another computer by a ?service tech and WD 1TB drive was recognized prior to logging in XP by BIOS.

So it cant be the drive?

Also cannot be recognized in disk management but only when connected by USB I can see the external HD.

    Thanks

It sounds like your mainboard does not support eSATA. I have found this a few times. It's not even the chipset, just lazy bios programing.
