I just moved into a new place and found that the previous tenants left their satellite dish on the roof. I think its a Dish Network but I'm not too sure because of the angle of the dish its kinda hard to read. Anyway, my questions are:

    - Can I use it to get free satellite tv?

    - I am a noob to satellites, so which receivers are best suited to a tight budget(no need for DVR or HDTV). Preferably a receiver that I can unlock all available channels, i.e. Fox, Nbc, Abc, Espn, HBO, etc.

Thanks for any help you can dish out (get it, "dish out") LOL!

Simply put, if that is a Dish Network dish the only way to get "free" tv is if the previous tenant left their old reciever, WITH the access card, AND didn't deactivate it. (Which would be stupidity on their part.)

If what you are looking for is a good residential service, check out either DirecTv's or DishNetwork's website, i'm sure you could find something that would suitable to you.

Be careful about crossing the line into advertising.

In fairness, Weirdo007 is apparently a DirecTV service tech so he knows a lot about the deals they have going on at any given time. I've worked for a cable company so I know how that goes. Besides, if you look through his posts you'll find that he's not only very knowledgeable, but also very helpful when it comes to satellite questions. And he did change the post to conform to the rules.

There are many legal FREE TO AIR sat channels you can receive. You need to purchase what is called an FTA receiver about $150. to $200. As to what you can receive or do with the receiver just do a Google for FTA receivers or FTA forums. All your questions will be answered there.
    Good luck.

Can you use an FTA with a DishNetwork Dish or any other fixed dish system?

Yes in most cases. The standard LNBs will work and some of the dual units like the DishPro and Legacy LNBs. The ones with 3 LNBs in a single head will usually not work right.
