Can I use re-author mode to capture clips of a DVD? I need them in mpg, avi, or mov separate files to re-author after some additional editing.

The DVDs have to be ripped to the HDD, then you can select your clips.
Each selection becomes a new Title - thus you will have as many new Titles as there are clips.
You can then use Vob2Mpg to convert the titles into individual mpeg files.

Alternately, you can take the output from DVD Shrink and use VobMerge to create one large VOB file - which can be renamed .mpg

Since .vob files generally contain other streams - like subtitles, this renamed file may not be acceptable to some programs.
