I want to hook up a Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8240 HDC HD DVR to my laptop. What software or connection do I need? It has 2 fire-wire ports, usb, esata, s-video. The main thing I want to do is transfer video files so I can burn them to DVD media.

You'll need software that can read those files. My advice is to try videoredotvsuite it can read most of the dvr/pvr/tivo/mpeg files without converting them first.

You can just transfer the files over to your laptop via the USB/firewire port whichever is faster on your laptop.

My laptop doesnt pick up the device/DVR when I connect it using a usb to usb cable. Do you think I should hook up a firewire/usb cable from the dvr to laptop? Or should I install software first and then try to connect the laptop to the DVR via usb cable or firewire/usb?

    Thanks-

Is it the cable companies box? Often the ports are
not active. My box a Motorola dch3416 has a bunch of different
ports - apparently only the Firewire is accessible, so perhaps
    give that a try.
