*sigh* Its me...again...seems like I'm getting NO end of trouble with this computer!

I got the HDD situation fixed because I was able to reformat it this time and reinstall everything. So far so good...

    However!

Today, Crystal (my fiance) turned on the computer and found that she couldn't get on the net (even though it worked fine yesterday). At first, I'm thinking "No big, deal, that happens sometimes and you just have to restart the modem." Unforunately, that was a no go. Even rebooting the whole system didn't help. I disabled/enabled the connection, ran a repair function, nothing seemed to help. Upon running "Diagnose Connection Problems" it pointed to my modem, but its working perfectly on my laptop even as I type.

The weirdest part is that by all accounts the computer shows it is, in fact, connected to the internet. Clicking the Status on my Local area connection icon shows it to be connected...it goes through all the steps when I click to repair (rather than giving me the "cannot renew ip" message)...it data being sent & received...the light on the modem showing connection to my ethernet card lights up. Despite all this I get a "cannot display webpage" message when I try to get on.

The fact that its working on my laptop suggests to me the problem is in my onboard ethernet. Although, I can really explain why the modem & the computer recognize when a connection to it is established or removed. If nobody as any other insight I think my best bet will be to buy a cheap PCI ethernet card and see if that works.

did you have a windows update yesterday before the pc was shutdown for the night? i had the same problem last night as i use zonealarm too. i reset my modem & routers( i have 2 of them), did an ipconfig /release & renew but couldn't connect to net even tho connection was good. shutdown zonealarm & i can get on the net but enable zonealarm then can't get on the net. i remember that before i last shutdown my pc there was 2 updates from ms, a security update & malicious tool so did a system restore to before those 2 updates & can get on net with zonealrm enabled. a customer of mine called with same problem & told him to do a system restore. reloading zonealarm might work but haven't tried it.

Yep, I was actually just coming to report in that system restore fixed the problem when I saw you post. One or both of those windows updates seem to be exactly the problem...wonder how I can load those withut messing up my computer again...

try 1 update at a time to see which stops you from the net.
