Up until this point I have had no problems at all with playing backed up dvd's. U rip using DvdDecrypter then burn with DvdShrink (using nero to burn). I have started getting backed up Dvd's from other sources and now I seem to have come to the problem that nearly half of thes dvd's I am copying now are expirenceing the same problem. They work fine on all my pc's but when I try to play them in my stand alone player (panasonic dvd-s29) the image scrolls up and down very fast as if it has some sort of copy protection or something. These are downloaded dvds and I then use dvd shrink to burn them. I also tried taking one of the scrolling dvd's and using dvdecrypter then reburning with dvdshrink to no avail. I tried one of these "Scrolling" dvds on a friends xbox 360 and it worked with no problems. Please help!!! There is no way to see if these dvds are going to have problems until after I have burned them!!! I have about 20 dvds with this problem and dont want to turn them into coasters!!!!!!
Wondered if you found the problem here. I have the same problem with my Panasonic S-27. My DVDs have been fine, but now all of a sudden the last 2 are scrolling too...but they work fine on my other DVD player and in my computers. Please email me if you found a solution - mmletzko@hotmail.com
Actually I have figured this problem out. The reason for the scrolling dvd's is that they are from Europe. In America our tv's and most dvd's players play NTSC format, while in Europe they use PAL. Unfortunantly my dvd player was not able to convert PAl to NTSC. I went to best buy and got a Philips DVD player for $65 and so far it has worked great (IT WILL do the PAL to NTSC conversion). Hope this helps
Ah...that makes perfect sense. The two DVDs I had the problem with were both from Europe! I was planning on going out and getting another DVD player at lunch today so now I can make sure I get the right one. You didn't by chance get DVP642 did you? Best Buy, Circuit City and Walmart all carry it for the same price...$60 and it does in fact list both formats in the specs for it on the Philips site. Thanks for the quick response!!!
I am fairly sure that is indeed the DVD player I picked up. I had read that it was pretty crappy online but so far it seems to work just fine. And I guess for 60 bucks if it lasts a year then we will have gotten our money's worth! Good luck!
I just got it at Walmart. It was $58 there and $65 at Best Buy. I went to Walmart first and noticed it had stickers on the box that said "Will play US movies ONLY - Region 1" so I was a little concerned it was a bit different. Went over to Best Buy and confirmed it was the same so went back over to Walmart to buy it. I like to buy at Walmart if I can 'cause you can always bring it back there easier if any problems. I confirmed on Philips site it will play NTSC and PAL so it should be OK. Will know in a few hours! The reviews for this one on the Circuit City site are actually good. The only issue I see (before bringing it home to check it out) is that it seems very cheaply made. At Walmart and Best Buy...it looked like it 'dips' in the middle. It's also wider than most other units...which wouldn't seem necessary. Oh well...as long as it looks good, sounds good, and plays all my discs I don't care.
I never even thought to look at Walmart. It was funny, when I was at Best Buy I asked the sales guy if they had dvd players that would convert Pal to NTSC, of course he said no... so I walked over, saw the philips and sure enough on the unit or the box it said it would do it. Oh well. I figured i'd start with this one and see how it works, then maybe buy a higher end one later on. It seemed like the selection of Pal to NTSC dvd players was pretty limited. Anyway, good luck!
While it is, in fact, a region problem, you will be happy to know that most dvd players in retail circulation will allow you to play PAL encoded media...even the cheap ones. However, another factor that you may have a problem with is your tv set. Since the image in PAL is processed much differently, and at a different resolution, most tv's will not project it properly (e.g. rolling or black and white picture). And also, it not common for retailers to have region converting hardware, due to copyright infringements. But there are dvd players capable of decoding it, so the rep must have misunderstood you. Anyways, you can solve this problem without even buying any more hardware, as long as you are the proud owner of Nero Digital Software. Just re-encode the AVI with Nero Vision Express, and it will automatically convert it to NTSC for you, making you a happy movie watcher.
