If PS3 sells well, and so does BLU-Ray, production costs will drop faster. $ony will find a cheaper way to make the system. Software costs will remain fixed, but hardware can fall. The more games that sell, the more $ony makes off license fees.
So there's a lot that could happen. If Nintendo's system is a huge hit, and $ony hardware sales are low, they'll lower their price. Which gives them a bigger loss. If the Wii still continues to sell better, $ony would be in a tough spot. Take another $100-150 hit to be competitive, or hope that Nintendo doesn't make enough good games.
    I'm h4ckz0ring the PS3 i buy. If it wasn't for that reason, I'd buy a Wii myself :p

@ easushi that was for 1 fiscal quarter. They take a loss at first but make it up along with a profit later when the technology comes down.We all know this and have said it many times here. That quarter is understandable now that xbox360 is out.Ps2 has made profit.I do aggree that most profit from ANY console comes from accessories, software, and services. That goes for any console.Microsoft still hasn't turned a profit for xbox or 360.

If anyone honestly thinks dreamcast went under due to pirates then why hasn't ps2,ps1,xbox,xbox360,nintendo gamecube seen any losses when they were hacked WAY more then dreamcast was.Pirates only contribute to 1% of most software sales and 3% of very popular games. It's a drop in the bucket.

I love the link posted by anubis this is what me, him, damondash, xyqo and the others said all along.

i would LOVE to see sega make a new consoule i LOVE their games but i dont think it is practical i mean it is in a ggod spot developing games why would they wanna make everything exclusive and ruin all their relationships? i think a bigger prospect for the next consoule company is macintosh.

    Think differently anyone?

Maybe you should read this link and the most important statement is the last one at the bottom. Then come back here and try to convince me about what kind of profit losses are due to pirates..

another section of the entertainment industry looking for scape goats.

Dont get us wrong though piracy is wrong and illegal and bad for any industry. But if paracy didn't take down shipping it's not gonna take down any aspect of entertainment

LOL they actually spend more trying to fight pirates in the courts than they make from that 1% sales loss. The fact is guys like 50cent(rapper) are the most pirated people around and yet he's the biggest seller.

Like I said on that link it's like free publicity a guy who pirates 50 then goes to his friends house and talks about how tight the album was that friend goes out and buy's the album.

You have to spend something in order to make something, it's the cost of doing bussiness.

I have to put my two sense in and remind everyone that not all console makers lose money from their consoles. Nintendo has been the only company that has not lost money on any console.

You know that more than just two sense. A whole lot more.
They make money not only on the licence but on hardware sales as well.
Think about it where would nintendo be rite now without gameboy.
They use a simple formula make it cost less thats it.
Thats why they didnt bother to keep up with the graphical capabilities of the 360 and ps3 thats how they manage to keep it going

But you see that is good Management, It doesn't matter how they don't lose money but that they always turn a profit in anything they do they didn't even lose money with the Virtual Boy. Now thats talent.
