Can someone help me figure how to change the book type on a DVD+RW disc to DVD-ROM? My burner is a Samsung OEM model TS-H552B with firmware version TS10, which I understand supports bitsetting. I'm running Nero 6.6.0.16. There's an option on the Disk Info window for changing the book type, but after executing the functionality (with no error message being given) the book type remains unchanges as DVD+RW. I've also tried an older, separate utility, DVD Bitsetter, but it fails with the message that the drive is not compatible with the software. Any suggestions would be welcomed. BTW, as a newbie I'd like to thank several of the AfterDawn vets whose various threads have helped me get to where I can burn DVD+R discs with consistently good results. Creaky, Kivory, Alkohol, ScubaPete - thanks for the help you've given me while helping out others with problems similar to what I had been running into. You guys are outstanding.
Booktyping can be done using DVD Decrypter, where you see the book on the bottom right side, click on that, select your burner and follow. I've taken this from a thread that Alkohol posted on this subject, all credit goes to Alkohol. (To change the book type or "bitsetting" using Nero CD-DVD Speed) 01) open up Nero StartSmart 02) click on Nero Toolkit 03) click on Nero CD-DVD Speed 04) click on Extra, Bitsetting 05) now arrow down and change the New Setting to DVD-ROM 06) click on Set, then Close. That's it... easy as smoking..!!
Gwendolin, the DVD-Decrypter option brings up a choice of 7 basic DVD platforms (Benq, LG, Lite-on, NEC, Plextor, Nu Tech, and Ricoh) which presumably comprise a significant percentage of the burners on the market. However, I've seen nothing that indicates that the Samsung drive is based on any of the above platforms. As I understand it, the units were engineered by a joint venture between Toshiba and Samsung. Will the Samsung be compatible with any of the devices listed above? I'd hate to maybe damage the burner by picking the wrong selection. Is Decrypter smart enough to detect an incompatible drive and not execute if might screw up the unit or corrupt the firmware? Thanks for your help with this (and your patience).
Can you try the suggestion by Alkohol, that is use Nero StartSmart, looks pretty easy. Personally I have NEVER attempted to booktype
Using the CD-DVD Speed utility started out promising until I actually tried making a change. In the Drive section, the book type field for DVD+RW was selectable and clicking 'Set' yielded a 'Book Type Successfully Changed' message, but no change showed for the drive configuration. In the Disc section, the selection field and Set button are greyed out. I fear that even though the Samsung firmware is supposed to support bitsetting, the utility writers have not yet implemented support for the Samsung API to do so. I'll continue to play with it (i.e. see if reburning the +RW produces the new book type) later this evening, but since the drive status didn't change after setting to DVD-ROM, I expect that it will still generate the same (DVD+RW) result. Again, thanks for the help and maybe there are other avenues to check out. Has anyone else been using the Samsung drives? I know that BenQ and Lite-on have a lot of users but hopefully there are a few Samsung users on the forum.
Raven, In the drive section - you said it was greyed out - was it greyed out but already had DVD-ROM settings on it? If so, then on your next backup that you use a +R with, - USE your Nero Application to burn - after its complete, check the disk and see if it says DVD-ROM - if so, your nero is where you want it. You can check by doing the following: Go back into your Nero info tools in the Cd/DVD Speed Section Then, click on the DISC INFO tab Put your FINISHED disk in Look at the part that says BOOK TYPE - If it says DVD ROM you were successful! --------- Hey Gwen! --- you are probably gone now ...
Zhelpz, it was the 'disc settings' section (specifically labeled 'current disc type' and 'current book type' that had the new setting field empty (and greyed out). The 'drive settings' section showed three disc types (DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL) with identical book types. Each of these had a 'new setting' field that allowed picking the current setting or DVD-ROM and a 'set button' that would presumably change the setting to the selected value. Problem with that was that the displayed value under book type was not updated after clicking the set button with DVD-ROM selected. As I said, I'll still do some tests this evening (when my time is my own) to see if reburning after trying to change the book type actually generates a different result. I'd just be a lot more confident if the displayed values had changed after clicking 'set' .
@Ravendown, on my second system I have the same Samsung and decrypter is not on the list, but if you download ImgBurn and if you burn an Iso image the Samsung will be on that list of Burners. Also I have found that even when I change the book type I will notice, as in Decrypter, that on the right hand side that the book type is still +R, yet after the burn I check it with Dvd Identifier and DvdInfo Pro and it says that teh disk officially was +R but the BookType is now -R or Dvd Rom. Just some heads up on the fact that the change happens and you can confirm it with several different programs. MovieDud
Ravendown, From what I can tell your drive is not capable of bitsetting. Look here http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=684&Search=Search&list=2#comments Under Buffer,Bit if it was capable of bitsetting it would say BitSetting. Type in benq instead and you will see where it says bitSetting http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DVDnameid=670&Search=Search&list=2#comments
MovieDud, thanks for the head's-up on Imgburn, I'll check it out this evening. Mort81, for some time the H552B didn't support bitsetting, but several weeks ago while checking the forums on different sites trying to figure out how to just get +R discs to burn reliably, I ran across a thread that mentioned the capability had been added in a new firmware release (TS09). I downloaded the latest version, TS10, which should also support it. I checked back after getting your response and found the thread, which had some users confirming they had successfully set the book type with the new firmware and Nero 6.6.0.13 or later (earlier versions didn't allow it). So I figure I ought to be close to the right configuration for it to work.
@Ravendown, after I sent the reply I checked on my Samsung and I could change the book type on ImgBurn and Nero and change it through InfoPro, but the latest Decrypter does not have a tab labeled Samsung, but ImgBurn did...I changed it and even though I changed it the right side of ImgBurn said Book type: +R, I had changed it and it was confirmed. I then checked the burn afterwards with InfoPro and Nero CD/Speed, and Dvd Identifier and the information showed that the disk is +R but the booktype was Dvd Rom. It does change the book type. Just fyi. Have a good one. MovieDud
Thats good info to know. Learn something everyday. Just goes to show you that not all previous evidence from respectable websites is always accurate. There's been a lot of progress made with f/w upgrades. At one time none of the pioneer dvdrw drives were capable of bitsetting but now with some modified f/w there are a couple models that are capable also. The old rules no longer apply and it's getting hard to keep up. I'm glad you are able to bitset and wish you the best. Happy "dvd-rom" burning. Mort
Mort81 wrote: "The old rules no longer apply and it's getting hard to keep up. " Ain't that the truth about more and more things these days. and: "I'm glad you are able to bitset and wish you the best." Well, in theory. It's a matter of actually getting it to work. Maybe the tips from MovieDud will prove to be the solution. Speaking of whom, MovieDud can you give me some details on how you're doing this successfully with Nero? Are you typically working with an ISO source? Will DVD Shrink fit into the process so I can fit the final result onto a 4.7G disc? Also, I'm working from an OEM package of Nero Express, that has been upgraded to 6.6.0.16 - is it reasonable to assume that it has the full bitset capability as the full Nero package, if that's what you're using? Thanks for your help so far. It feels like I may be close to getting a working solution in place with the help of you and the others.
Quote: "can you give me some details on how you're doing this successfully with Nero?" When I use Nero 99% of the time I burn the video files that Recode 2, CloneDvd 2, or Rebuilder has made. I will burn the Rebuilder's Iso Image that I tell it to make during the process. Quote: "Are you typically working with an ISO source?" Only Decrypter's image files and with Rebuilder's image files (which actually since Rebuilder is now able to work with ImgBurn...that as long as youhave ImgBurn installed Rebuilder will burn your disk right after processing...pretty cool Quote: "Will DVD Shrink fit into the process so I can fit the final result onto a 4.7G disc?" Shrink will but I would encourage you to set the target size as 4350 or 4400. It keeps you safe without burning to close to the outer rim of the blank media, which if the media is cheap were the dye is not as even at the outer rim. Quote: "Also, I'm working from an OEM package of Nero Express, that has been upgraded to 6.6.0.16 - is it reasonable to assume that it has the full bitset capability as the full Nero package, if that's what you're using?" That's what I use, actually I use the Burning Rom. When I open Nero I see the screen with the options and I always select Nero burning Rom and then set booktype there. Nero remembers this so that when I use Nero it automatically Boork-types Dvd+R. My friend I hope I have answered some of the questions. If not just let me know. Another burning buddy, MovieDud
Well, I tried both ImgBurn and Nero, using an ISO file as source, to burn the +RW disc as a DVD-ROM book type. Both attempts failed as the disc showed as a DVD+RW book type with DVD Identifier, CD-DVD Speed's disc info, DVDInfoPro, etc. It was funny because each utility indicated that the book type was being set to -ROM successfully. Here are some points that I do not think would influence the outcome (but in case I'm wrong...): 1. I created the ISO file using DVD Decrypter on the original +RW burned copy (since it had been properly sized in the first go around by DVD Shrink). 2. I used the same +RW disc in each of the new runs, since I've been reading in my forum research that RW discs can have their book type rewritten (like any other data on the disk). In case it will help, here's the log file from the Nero run. Note that near the end of the log, there's the message that the book type has been successfully set to -ROM. I didn't see any obvious problems in the log (but that's what a newbie should see, right ). Comments, suggetions, and advice is welcome from one and all. ====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ====== Windows 2000 5.0 IA32 WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=4.71 (0002), size=45056 bytes, created 7/16/2002 9:20:56 PM ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Utilities\DVD\Nero\Nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 10/26/2004 6:35:34 PM Nero Version: 6.6.0.16 Internal Version: 6, 6, 0, 16b (Nero Express) Recorder: <TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B>Version: TS10 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.6.0.16 Adapter driver: <IdeChnDr> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ATAPI CD-ROM: <TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B>Version: TS10 - HA 1 TA 0 - 6.6.0.16 Adapter driver: <IdeChnDr> HA 1 === Scsi-Device-Map === DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 98196H8 IdeChnDr Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On DiskPeripheral : WDC WD2500JB-00GVA0 IdeChnDr Port 0 ID 1 DMA: Off CdRomPeripheral : TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B IdeChnDr Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8400B IdeChnDr Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off === CDRom-Device-Map === TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B R: CDRom0 HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8400B S: CDRom1 ======================= AutoRun : 1 Excluded drive IDs: WriteBufferSize: 74448896 (0) Byte ShowDrvBufStat : 0 BUFE : 0 Physical memory : 511MB (523280kB) Free physical memory: 199MB (204712kB) Memory in use : 60 Uncached PFiles: 0x0 Use Inquiry : 1 Global Bus Type: default (0) Check supported media : Disabled (0) 18.11.2005 Burn DVD Image 1:00:46 AM #1 Text 0 File Reader.cpp, Line 127 Reader running 1:00:46 AM #2 Text 0 File Writer.cpp, Line 122 Writer TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B running 1:00:46 AM #3 Text 0 File Burncd.cpp, Line 3233 Turn on Disc-At-Once, using DVD media 1:00:52 AM #4 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 270 Last possible write address on media: 2295103 (510:01.28, 4482MB) Last address to be written: 2286005 (508:00.05, 4464MB) 1:00:52 AM #5 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 282 Write in overburning mode: NO (enabled: CD) 1:00:52 AM #6 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 2483 Recorder: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552B, Media type: DVD+RW Disc Manufacturer ID: MKM, Media Type ID: A02, Product revision number: 0 Disc Application Code: 0, Extended Information Indicators: 1 1:00:52 AM #7 Text 0 File DlgWaitCD.cpp, Line 448 >>> Protocol of DlgWaitCD activities: <<< ========================================= Insert empty disc to write to. Just an update to let people know about the progress I've gained on the problem. As a variation I tried changing the book type on a DVD+R disc with Nero and succeeded. I then tried using ImgBurn on a completely unused DVD+RW and that also succeeded. Apparently, the pristine disc can be book typed when being initially formatted but not on subsequent overwrites (at least on my setup). So I have at least one way of setting a +RW disc to -ROM. But the ultimate goal of this exercise - being able to play a +RW disc in my standalone Panasonic player - still fails even with the book typed disc. It's an older player that plays what it plays quite well, so we'll have to deal with its limitations until I'm gainfully employed again. To Gwendolin, Zhelpz, MovieDud, and Mort81 many thanks for your advice and patience. This newbie appreciates the help.
Ravendown, Some set top dvd players just don't like rewritable media of any format. Sounds like the case with yours. Will it play the dvd+r media booktyped dvd-rom?
Yes, it does as well as +R typed as +R. I found out the specs on it stated it couldn't read +RW after I had picked up some discs to try to effectively time-shift watching some features (wanted to return the DVD's to the owner but watch them when my wife had the time to do so). I was hoping that changing the book type might be sufficient to let them work with the unit. That apparently isn't going to be the case.
