Here's the story I bought this PC which is Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz processor, 80GB harddrive and only 256MB Ram. So I bought 2 x 1GB Ram upgrades from eBay. The problem is I bought them on separate occasions and one is PC3200 and the other is PC2700. Now im not Bill Gates when it comes to computers but im sure they are conflicting with each other. Recently i've had a lot of blue screens of death. But they've stopped all of a sudden, but other problems have happened. On old windows games which worked perfect before, if there's a little struggle where something has to load for a sec, it crashes and the error message about encountering a problem has come up, etc, etc. Same as some video files. Sometimes a webpage will have end nows and just crash. So should I remove one of the RAM chips? If so which one? The PC3200 or the PC2700? cheers
Test your system running one or the other as you have already thought of. Even though the system may run them both as the slower ram, in this case the 3200 will run as 2700 when matched together, the cycle timings are still not the same. That may be where the problem is. If all goes well with either, I'd say use the 3200....what's the FSB of your P4?
okay cheers for the advice... this is the info from my motherboard manual! Memory Socket - 184-pin DDR Module socket x 2 Support 2pcs DDR266/DDR33/DDR400 DDR Modules Expandable to 2.0GB hope this helps mate
What I am saying is, if your P4 has an 800Mhz FSB (front side bus), you'd be better off replacing the PC2700 for another PC3200 chip. Try running the system on either chip for a while, test the heck out of it and see how it does. Speed ratings, and clock cycles on memory are two different things. Speed, or FSB ratings (PC3200,2700) 400mhz/333mhz respectively, are how fast the memory interacts with the chipset. Clock cycles, or ratings you see on the memory such as ex: 2.2.3.6, or 3.3.5.8, are how the memory cycles the information in the chip itself. It's when those do not match that problems handling data can occur. If you get another PC3200 chip, and your first timings are say, 2.3.3.6, and the new one is 2.3.3.7...there's not much of a difference there and you shouldn't have any issues. Your best bet, is to find out the exact make/model of your PC3200 chip, and get another one. A program called CPU-Z will help you with that.
Okay lol some more details for you to check out before I finally test each RAM! CPU Socket: Support Intel Pentium 4 775-Land LGA Package utilizes Flip-Chip Land Grid Array (FCLGA4) package processor. Support CPU Frequency 533MHz/800MHz Support 2.8G/3.0G/3.6G LGA 775 Pentium 4 Processor Reserves support for future Intel Pentium 4 Processors. I really hope this helps lol
Ok, your best bet would be to replace the PC2700 for another PC3200 same make/model. Then, in the BIOS, set your memory by SPD (or Auto)...should be an option. Either that, or set it to 100% i.e. 200(400mhz).
or can I just take the one memory out and just leave it at that? lol I really don't want no more problems! Im at the end of my tether with computing lol! I've got another problem now, dunno if you know anything about UTorrent here's the link to it http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/356930 thank you again for all your advice!
Yeah, use the PC3200. As for as Torrent software, I don't use it. I don't really download all that much.
