What do you mean print from the laptop to the desktop? Is the printer connected to the desktop? If that's the case, then you need to have File and Printer sharing enabled and run the Printer Wizard on the Vista laptop and it should find the printer if it is set up properly. Also, make sure your firewall is allowing traffic to the desktop otherwise you could run into problems. Post back if you have more questions.

thank you for your help Wy. I meant the printer is connected to my pc. ok ! I am using a linksys router and how can I allow the traffic on the network so that I can print. Is that possible that I can get the step-by-step from you for both configurations ( pc with XP and laptop with vista ) . I still cannot see the printer.

    Thank you

    Boulova,
I'll assume you're using a firewall and have SP2 installed as I write this. If you haven't run the Network Wizard, please do so. It's located in the Control Panel. You might have to restart your computer after you finish so just go ahead and do it. You also need to configure the firewall to allow your LAN's traffic. For example I'm using the free version of Zone Alarm. If you have a Linksys router then I'm sure your IP address starts as 192.168.1.?. In your firewall program, add an IP range of 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.255. Please see the pic below.

Then verify that file and printer sharing is checked in the properties of your network adapter. To get there just go to the Control Panel and double click on Network Connections - then find your network adapter, right click and select properties to bring them up. See pic.

Now before you try and add the printer on the Vista machine, make sure you have the printer shared on the desktop. Don't forget to click apply and ok and then restart the computer. See pics below.

Ok. Now run the Add Printer wizard on the Vista machine and just follow the onscreen prompts. Here's a couple of pics of what it should look like.

That's basically it. Remember, in order for you to use the printer your desktop MUST be left on. Post back if you have more questions.
