I bought a 360 off of ebay it had the 3 red rings.... when I opened it up someone had done the 10 volt fan mod, soldered the fan wire(brown) to the motherboard. I disconnected it and did the 12 volt fan mod via the dvd power plug. ( red AND brown wire) there was still some solder left on the motherboard (is this what is causing the two rings?) same problem, but got it fixed a little when i tightened the heat sinks. try it it might work for you.
It's overheating. Either one or both of your heatsinks aren't sitting evenly or you're using a silicone based thermal paste instead of silver. My guess is the former since you've done a 12v mod (but the silicone thermal paste really does suck for 360s)
I found a similar thread where a guy said something about the different power bricks of the 360. I bought this console (console only, no cables etc.) on eBay. Now obviously, if you guys saw the video, the 360 turns on and the green lights come on...etc. then the screen goes blank the power is cut to the motherboard and the two red lights turn on. could the problem be the power brick? When I go home tonight I will check the leveling/placement of the heatsinks etc. Thank you for the feedback. I am using Arctic Silver 5
Whenever i've seen a wrong power brick used with the plug modified to fit it caused a 3 red ring. If you or the previous owner didn't modify the plug and it fits then it's the right power supply. You can also double check by checking the wattage on the sticker near the power connector on the 360 then comparing it to the brick. If the brick is greater than or equal to the 360's wattage requirement it's fine. 2 lights is always overheating as far as i know
ok,i got it too work, i wasn't using enough thermal paste.... anyways, i am fixing another 360 and it is funny that you mentioned the power brick. This 360 has no power to it when I turn it on. All i get is the red light on the powerbrick and the three red lights on the 360.... I really appreciate your help, how do I go by this problem?
okay....nevermind the red lights, i accidentally broke off the sata connector on the motherboard...you know the black port next to the dvd power port. what do I do....AHHHHH!!!!!
Well I'm sure you could find another sata port from pc or xbox and maybe it would fit, or you could just cut the sata cable and solder wires straight to pins. Which would probably be easiest since you dont have to go through trouble of desoldering this one and another one. Might not be prettiest solution but works.
Hmmm.... I'll give that a try... anyways, I have two 360s i am trying to fix at once. Problem: instant three red rings the fans spin for less than half a second and then shut off. no screen appears etc. I observed the motherboard and noticed that on the bottom of the motherboard of one 360, the cpu area was bent downwards; the other 360 had the same problem with the gpu area. could this be the problem for the instant three rings? and how do i go by fixing it. p.s. I have already done wooly's heat gun method and just now noticed the cpu and gpu areas being bent...
Okay, so How do I go about fixing this issue...where do I start? The error code for the 360 that's power brick goes from Orange to green back to Orange instantly....0031 The error code for the 360 that's power brick goes from Orange to red instantly....0001 now for this code, i KNOW that my power supply isnt bad, because I am using it between different consoles. I have three different power supplies and use them interchangeably.
your board is probably shorted like W00ly said, look for solder splashes. other than that i dont know.
