I am VERY new to this, as in I just got a DS Lite and a friend of mine recommended the R4i Ultra and an 8GB micro SD card to go with it. However, most places I have seen say NOT to get an R4. Which is better, and why?

I see both of these at countless websites, what is a reputable place to buy each from?

After I get it, what exactly do I need to do to use it?

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

I would hav to say, get an acekard 2i. Simple reason is there is more support for the acekard! Apparently wood R4 is a good firmware for R4 cards, but I haven't personally used it, so I couldn't say! Also, the acekard is updatable, so if you were to upgrade to a DSI or 3DS, you would still be able to use your acekard. Acekard = money well spent! I would recommend either getting it from 0shippingzone.com or gamekool.com

Acekard 2i is a reputable flashcart with great AKAIO kernel, and it is good choice for DSi consoles. And since you have a DS Lite, why don't you get a R4DS ? Cheap and compatible with all latest game ROMs with latest Wood R4 kernel.

And R4i Ultra can really works with AKAIO 1.8.6a, most users call it a clone to Acekard 2i, but it is cheaper.

By the way, you can search a lot of Youtube video to guide you on how to use it.

I agree if you want to use the card for the anything up to the DSXL then it is more likely a R4i v 1.4.1, however if your going to use the 3DS you need the R4i3DS, we got ours from r4iflash.com.

For your NDSL the R4 is enough! The DS card is better but the price is high more!

    Acekard2i
The Acekard2i is an excellent cart with the use of the third party AKAIO firmware.

    - Great compatibility and supports patched games well
    - Inexpensive
    - Supports large MicroSD cards
    - Great cart for the cost

This cart lacks all of the bells and whistles of the DSTwo but serves all the possible needs of somebody just looking to play DS games.

    How to use:
    1. Format the MicroSD with the Panasonic formatter (http://filetrip.net/f6027-Panasonic-SD-FormatterPORTABLE.html).
    2. Visit the URL on the packaging , download and unzip the last firmware onto your microSD.
    3. Insert the MicroSD card in you Acekard.
    4. Insert the Acekard in your DS.
    5. Done. Enjoy.

Seems you are new to this item, you'd better choose a reliable site to get it.
    Acekard.com have a recommended site:
    http://www.slickgate.com/acekard-2i-ak2i-141-compatible-for-3dsnds-litendsindsi-xl_p1800.html

They'll do everything for you , then you just plug and play.

I don't understand how people can say a flashcard is expensive. At the end of the day, any flash card you buy is cheap in comparison to the prices of retail DS games. The more you spend on a flashcard, the better the quality most likely is of the card you're buying and you can guarantee that the more expensive flashcards are most likely to be supported for longer than the cheaper ones. Also, they tend to have more features and better compatibility than cheaper cards aswell.

So just remember, there isn't such a thing as an expensive flashcard.

you can take r4i series into consideration, such as : r4i-sdhc 3ds card,r4i-sdhc v1.4.2 or r4i gold 3ds card .Both of them can work on dsi v1.4.2 and r4i-sdhc 3ds and r4i gold 3ds can work on all modles of nintendo and they are very cheaper as well.

Of course, you should choose the Acekard 2i and use the akaio kernel ......Another, they will release the update for V1.4.2 soon!
