The norton anti-virus was pre-installed on this computer. The computer usage it's at 0% after it's done booting up and it's a norton internet security 2006 and you know what. I pay 49.99 and it only catch one virus (because i'm careful). It's a hp so hp likes to install that norton everyone is complaing about. I have never seen what this computer can actually do and my father's computer is able to work his computer faster than mine and yet i have a faster processor. I installed 1 gb memory card and it's working a hell lot faster now but still i notice the lag. the abavilable memory it get's left on this computer after it boots up is 956 mb and the processor runs at 3.06 ghz. when i open up word it takes 7 seconds to boot up while my father takes no time at all. when opening start menu all programs there is no lag at all in his but my yes. i have 62 process running and i'm wondering this computer is slow because it's a dell
You have a lot of processes running in the background. Click on Start, Run, and type in msconfig. Look at the Startup tab to examine which processes are running at startup. You might be able to uncheck some, reboot, and see if it helps. As far as your virus program - I have used both McAfee and Norton in the past. Both gave me problems. Started using AVG Free by Grisoft a few years ago and have been pleased ever since. I would recommend uninstalling Norton and go for the FREE Grisoft program. Just Google it.
I would uninstall Norton and use something else. Seriously that thing hogs your computer's resources like it's nobody's business. It's slow, clunky and runs about 20 processes in the background. NOD32 AntiVirus, AVG AntiVirus and Trend Micro are all compact, fast and use way less memory. Try AVG if you want something free. Btw if you have too many processes running, open up Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and end any that you don't need. Most of the ones running under your username are safe to get rid of, just don't delete any from SYSTEM, SYSTEM SERVICE, LOCAL SERVICE or NETWORK SERVICE and DON'T delete explorer.exe
When using ctrl+alt+delete to open the task manager, look at processes tab and to the side of each process(program) is the amount of memory each is using. Just find out which one is hogging all the memory. If norton is the culprit, just remove it and replace it with a free firewall (zone alarm) and free antivirus(avg) and also just so you never get your computer infected use the free program "returnil" anytime you surf the internet. I got all 3 programs installed on 3 difeerent computers with no slowdown encountered. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Returnil_Virtual_System_Personal_Edition_d5702.html
