should nero take 9 hours to burn a movie ?

I am new to burning but It seems to me that it should not take 6 to 10 hours to burn one movie the movies I am burning are avi's and mpegs and stuff is there something I am doing wrong ? also I have several other programs for ripping and shrinking etc. but I cant figure out how to shrink these movies since When I try a program like dvd shrink it is looking for an actual dvd in one of my dvd drives instead of an avi or mpeg ????? Can anyone please help thanks
