    hi

sorry if this is in the wrong section...and the lengthy post.

    First some background info

I have recently purchased a eurovox ex5000, when i connect it to my supply and do the flash power scan ect. it finds loads of channels, but nearly all say 'No or Bad signal'. I have a subbed box and an old starview 1 box, both of which work fine on the same feed.

I have been and knocked on the neighbours door who is a virgin media engineer (well he drives one of there vans) and he came round and tested my signal (as i told him that my subbed sammy was playing up) he tested it and said that everything was ok but put a 4bd attenuator on the line.

After reconnecting my eurovox i went throught the process again, this time the channels had got more correct names on them and a few had a steady pic for 2-3 seconds, before the 'No or Bad signal', error came on again.

I then assumed that the box was faulty and sent back top the shop i got it from, along with the above info, they have since tested it and said that the box is fine and i probably have a signal that is too strong. I had asked if a SV4 usb box would work as my other SV box does and they said that it uses a fine tuner, differebnt from the old starview so may not work either.

My question is, what should a signal strenght be - ie how many db, when i look at the settings on my subbed sammy i have 47db. Is the shop right on the strength thing ? and also the Starview 4 ?

Sorry for the long question .

If the 4Db attenuator made it somewhat better, you should have purchased a variable attenuator. They are only a few quid and you could have manually attenuated the signal until it was corrected.

The SV4 uses a different tuner but they are not correct in assuming it is any worse or better, as its a cable problem and not a tuner problem.

    thanks for the reply,
been all over the forums this morning trying to find an answer. Where can i get a varible attenuator from, i have looked in maplins but the say that it is not for cable tv. Has it got to be a 'forward path attenuator', as well

    thanks again,

visited the site but unsure if it is

    or

Konig SAT-ATT20-KN Variable Satellite Attenuator. An in-line metal attenuator (range 45 - 2300MHz) with a switch to vary attenuation strength (from 0 - 20dB). Reduces interference caused by excessive signal strength. F- plug connections. Impedance 75 Ohm. Comes with free F socket to f plug converter (not shown in image). £5.99

    thanks again in advance
