Out of nowhere my system will no longer work properly with Nero. I think it happened once Windows forced me to select a playback region. Not even the newest firmware versions or AnyDVD helps. I was wondering if there is an "on-the-fly" (no saving to hard drive first) DVD copy program which is capable of using dual layer burners. Also, I need something very similar to Recode, which allows for very basic authoring.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Darrell

For basic authoring, similar to recode is the free application DVD Shrink.
If you post a Nero error log someone might be able to help you.

My issues never create an error log, but I'll describe the problems here.
My system is a dual AMD MP system with 1 GB RAM. I'm running all SCSI. The ATAPI DVD drives are using an ATAPI to SCSI interface. The drives are on their own channel. They are Sony DDU-1615 (firmware FYS1) and DRU-710A (BYX3). Operating system is XP Pro, SP1. The dual layer media I am using is Verbatim +R DLs, at 2.4x speed. Was also using AnyDVD 4.1.1.2
I was using Recode (part of Nero Vision Express 3.1.0.11) and it was importing movies just fine. Now, no matter what version I use, I get the "Nero Recode 2 encountered an error and cannot continue. Failed to read from the File VTS_01_0.VOB. Copy protection error - the read failed because the sector is encrypted." error.
Now what happens with Nero Burning ROM is quite strange. I was using version 6.6.0.14 sucessfully. I have my dual layer media in the burner, but Nero tells me it is only 4.5 GB and spits it back out.
I believe these problems started when WinDVD 4 told me I had to pick a region for playback on my dvd player. So I tried setting the region on the burner also. I upgraded to all the latest versions of Nero 6 and AnyDVD and updated all the firmware. I blew the system away and started from scratch. I still get the same problems. I don't think I can get Nero working again unless I can find a way to reset the drives so they don't have a region selected.

The last time I looked at DVD Shrink, it didn't have the features that Recode does - such as being able to select particular audio tracks, subtitles, or other individual things. Did that change? And does it do on-the-fly copying now?

Your AnyDVD 4.1.1.2 is old, version 5.6.3.1 is available. That is why Recode can not read the discs, because the disc is indeed protected.

For your burner, DRU-710A (BYX3) there is firmware upgrade available, BYX5:

http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/downloads/710FWBYX5/710A_BYX5.zip Update this and see if it recognizes the DL discs. But if you use a DL disc, you don't need to re-author. You can rip the disc using DDVD Decrypter with AnyDVD in the Background(after you update AnyDvd), make an ISO and then burn the ISO with Decrypter or Nero.
For your DVD ROM there is also new firmware available:

    ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/rmsd/R113812.EXE

I would also uninstall the current nero, as it is buggy. Use the Nero Clean tool from Nero web site, wipe out the 6.6.1.4 version and get 6.6.0.18:

    http://httpdl2.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18.exe

As for Shrink, it does exectry that what you want. You can remove audios, subtitles, can cut from the end/start of the movie. I am looking for a guide.
    here is one:

    http://www.dvdr-digest.com/articles/23_3.html

you can just google for one. There are many out there.

You can also use DVDFab Decrypter to rip the disc onto your drive, it is free and handles the new encryptions

I should have said my system WAS that way when everything was working properly. I have updated everything (firmware and software to latest versions) this morning and still get the same problems.

I'll download Shrink and see what it's got. Thanks for the help so far.

It seems DVD Shrink doesn't do on-the-fly recording, but it has the other options I want. The only problem is when I hit the Backup button, the program crashed out with this error:
AppName: dvd shrink 3.2.exe AppVer: 3.2.0.15 ModName: dvd shrink 3.2.exe ModVer: 3.2.0.15 Offset: 0007c98a

I can't win. I'm going to try Safe mode with AnyDVD and turning it off for the recorder. That's what I did previously when Nero was working.

Nope. It still crashes out as soon as I hit OK in the Backup options to start the process.
