I think I know the answer to this already but I gotta ask to know for sure.

Is AVI format the SAME as MPEG4???

Or do I need to convert it to DIVX

The reason I ask is my brother just picked up a cheap DVD player from Canadian Tire for $20 the plays MPEG4 format. I have several movies and thought if I don't need to convert them I can fit 4 or 5 on a single DVD disc.

So, does a dvd player that plays MPEG4 play AVI or should I drop them into the DIVX converter and convert them first???????

So in other words, I'll need to convert the AVI using Divx?

Then I'll be good to go?

If your avi is not a mpeg4, then yes. Avi can come in different codecs. You can run your avi file to a program call Gspot and it will tell you what codec is in the avi file.
