I'm building a pc, my first. I have questions ; 1) Is a heatsink required, or optional? 2) Jumpers, do I keep them open, or short? Thank you for your help.
You need to be more specific. Heat sink on what? Chipset, CPU, memory, harddrives? What jumpers? Harddrive, ISA parallel port card, micro channel serial card? Be more specific, and you will get better answers. ~Rich
Heatsink - I am referring to a CPU heatsink. I wasn't aware of a heatsink for anything but a CPU, if I did I would have been specific. Jumpers - I am referring to MOBO jumpers. Again, I wasn't aware of any other jumpers. I was reading the manaul for my MOBO and it mentioned jumpers, that was the first time I ever heard of them. It showed 2 options, open & short, which do I choose? Sorry for my lack of detail, I am ignorant. I truly don't know what I'm talking about, that is why I'm asking for help.
no cpu heatsink & fan assembly equals a fried cpu & possibly motherboard. depends on what the jumpers do as whether they be open or closed.
@defu: I wasn't saying that to be rude, so I hope you were not offended. My apologies if you were. Most mobo's today are jumperless for the most part. They are configured via the BIOS. Like ddp said, a properly installed heatsink (with thermal paste) is REQUIRED, along with a cpu fan. Give us model #'s and someone here should be able to help you out. ~Rich
