    Hello Everyone.......
    Happy New Year Everyone
Wow,,,,,I thought that I would look some info up for my father in law to help him burn some dvds and I did not realize how much is involved. We would be considered extremely newbies. Everyone here seems liek they have a large amount of patience for people like us. I have been browsing this site for a couple of days and I feel lost. Not sure which programs we should use and what order to use them. Could anyone possibly tell me the simplest way to do this. He currently has dvd shrink and nero startsmart on his pc. What would be the simplest procedure for a newbie to use/do to burn dvds. What programs would you sugggest and what order to use them etc etc......Thanks for any advise/help that you can offer us.

    Welcome to aD becca3733 :)

At the bottom of my sig is a link that, once clicked on, will lead you to several guides on the how to's of almost anything needed. Just keep this link handy for all your needs. Good luck!

If you want very easy... I think Anydvd/CloneDVD2 are about as simple as it can get...You just click on the anydvd icon it runs in the background..open clone...follow a few simple steps outlined in the guide you've been reading. I really think the user interface is very simple and hard to mess up. Plus...try it free for 20 days, and then if you don't like it, you can just stop using it.

@becca3733, below my sig there are 3 links, if you click on either one by ScubaPete or bbmayo you will find all you need.
For ease of use, being a relative noob I would recommend you select the guide by bbmayo.
All you do is drop your little pointer on the link and click. Good luck and let us know your results.

If you are backing up one of your DVDs you will need AnyDVD running in background. As previously stated it is free for 21 days trial(this is to remove any copy protection)

Thanks for all of your inof.......I have been reading the different guides that are out there......It would appear that I need/could use three different programs to do this......One to run in background to remove protections, one to compress/shrink the data and another one to actually burn backup. If that is correct than now it is just a matter of picking the programs to use to do this. I do have another question in general. What is firmware? Do I need to worry about this? Thanks Again

@becca3733, if the original copy is "Copyrighted", yes then you will need AnyDVD running, its a very simple prog to use. Once you have downloaded it just follow bbmayo guide in my sig. Fairly simple and easy to follow.
Firmware relates to your burner but that isnt a concern at this stage.

Firmware is sort of the BRAINS of your DVD Burner which can be updated by an individual when newer versions come out. It depends on who makes your burner, your burner model number and whether or not there is a more up to date firmware version out there. The firmware tells the burner how to handle the laser on different makes of media for an example and is very important when trying to burn newer media that becomes available from time to time, not to mention older media and burn speeds. Go to your burner manufactures website to look for FIRMWARE updates usually under support to see if a newer version is available for your model.

Try this link for an example and look down the page for the firmware topic. This link was found doing what I just mentioned above.

One thing you might try is doing a search on google as an example and placing the words firmware and dvd writer to see what comes up that can give you a much broader explanation.

I used ScubaPete's and bbmayo's guides and they were top-notch. 99% of the time, I use AnyDVD & CloneDVD2. Both programs are available for 21-day free use, but I bought the programs because I like them. I only copy the title and not all the other "stuff". I put the original in my dvd-rom and a blank dvd in the burner, open clonedvd, click on "copy main title" and follow the very simple instructions. Once it starts burning, I go do something else for about an hour and my dvd is ready. I don't have a very fast system, so it takes me about 60-70 minutes start to finish. BTW, use really good media -- this means no Memorex!!! Good Luck and have fun burning. I've done about a 150 since I started. There are some very knowledgeable people here at AD.
