I have started backing up my DVD collection and some movies don't say whether they are single or dual layer (I also have a lot of movies with no cases to check either). I prefer to keep dual layer movies on dual layer back-up discs but they cost too much to use them for every movie.
Is there a way to check weather a movie is single or dual layered?

I have noticed many movies that were well under 2 hours are on dual layer disc (which was how I originally thought you could tell)

    Please help if you can.

If it's a film such as umm..Saw 2, Spider-man, any hollywood film, its ALWAYS a double layer disc. Rarely will you ever see a store boughten dvd that isnt.

Many movies are dual-layer but rarely are they close to 8 GB. More or less 6GB. Stick it into your computer & check its capacity to find out.
