Sometimes when I backup DVD's, there are tiny skips while playing the movie or the screen gets very pixelated for a moment and then keeps playing fine. This is not the case with every movie I backup, but tends to happen every few. I primarly use the Shrink/Nero combo.

I've been using Memorex DVD-R beause two of my professors recommended it. I told them that I have been told (by most of you fine people) that Verbatim is an excellent form of media and they replied by saying Verbatim has a high moisture content which isn't a good thing to have due to where we are at geographically. (Alaska) Any truth to that?

And one more question - Have any of you experienced problems using LightScribe with backed up movies or DVD's? As in, not playing in DVD players/drives correctly or corrupting sectors on the actual DVD-R?

    Thanks for your time.

i think you should ask your professors if their moisture content is ok instead of worrying about the Verbatim :)

plus i've lived on a narrowboat for a few years and kept my DVDs (not Memorex i might add - see my sig!) on the floor of the boat without incident, and this is the UK and in the winter the floor is unbelievably cold as it's a foot below water level so the discs used to live quite often in Alaska-like temperatures.

This sounds very much like a classic case of the Nero setup being checked and a suspicious eye checking out exactly which media are hiding under the Memorex moniker (could be a variety of disc manufacturers, even from tub to tub of identical looking Memorex).

Anyway, i've teleported this thread to the Nero forum and let's have a look at your Nero logfile.
If it's Nero 6, let's have the LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

if it's Nero 7, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C80' or similar.

Either way you can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

i see you've had this problem since at least Sept 2005 (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/235892) so let's see if we can wean you off those Memorex and get your Nero setup in tip-top shape

Memorex buys their media from many different manufactures, some ok but most are not. Use this free utility http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and tell us who the manufacturer of your memorex discs are. Regardless of geographic location, I would recommend verbatim over memorex any day. At the best those memorex's could be made by ritek which is rated as good budget/second class media. Verbatim is rated as 1st class media. I'd bet you will have better results with verbatim. Try a small package. Can't be any worse.

If you prefer the dvd-r format, I would probably recommend Taiyo yuden over verbatim but you will have to order ty's online or look for sony's or fuji's made in japan in local stores. For dvd+r media, I personally prefer verbatim even over TY's. What make and model dvdrw drive do you have? What firmware? What speed are you burning at? What speed is your media rated at?

In the Sept 2005 threads it was actually the labels I put on the DVD's that made them skip I found out... :p since then just the little bit of skipping, that sometimes you can barely notice. But I will stop using the Memorex. I burn at 4x always by recommendation of Alkoholik or whatever his handle is.

The burner is a Mad Dog Multimedia 16x Dual-Layer burner.

I'll go to the other computer and grab the log file and post it. Thanks.

This was the log of a CD-R I burned. I couldn't find anything in the file about any DVD's I had ever burned.

    Thanks.

hi, gotta reboot out of linux into Windows for a bit, but for now i see your burner's firmware is outdated (by at least a year!) -
    - here's latest firmware dated Feb 2006 - http://mdmm.com/drivers/OpticalDrives/16XDVD9A2_FW_3F3.exe

edit- what i'd recommend first is running a 'simulation' burn with a blank dvd to allow Nero to go thru the motions with a disk (but not write to it) and it produces a section of logfile, then paste that here

    Excellent. Firmware updated.

Is there a 'simulation disk' option with Nero or how do I do it?

it's near the burn button. i see you have the Express version there, not sure if simulation is available to you though, i only use 'proper' Nero Burning Rom

That's strange, because I'm supposed to have the Nero "suite." It came with pretty much everything Nero made I thought... will those updates that you posted still work although it's a different Nero package or should I check Ahead's website for updates to the "suite?"

I'll try it all when I get home and post the log tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for your continued support!

One problem after another I'm afraid. Ever since upgrading the drives firmware, upgrading nero, and switching to verbatim media, every DVD movie I have burned is extremely choppy. It must skip every couple seconds, and forward five seconds in the disc, then play for a few more seconds, then skip forward another five seconds. It does this redundantly. The first movie I backed up, Inside Man, I thought it was just the assload of protection on it. But then I checked to see by backing up an already known-good iso, V for Vendetta. It did this as well.

I'm going to uninstall Nero, and reinstall the version I had before, unless you knowledgable folks have any take on what the problem is...

The media is Verbatim DVD+R Advanced AZO.

edit: Disregard message, I figured it out. ;)

    Thanks.
