    Discmania & Krumdog,
At change of chapters, I don't experience skipping as much as frame-freezing sometimes. However, this freezing doesn't seem to be predetermined, ie. if I rewind and play again through the change of chapters, the freezing doesn't always occur. I use DVDShrink, the latest ed. Discmania, maybe you're unto something when you say that the problem lies with the original disk. That obvious possibility had totally escaped me. It might explain why problems occur at the same scenes on different discs; that is if we all agree that DVDShrink and Nero are highly competent software.

Herbsman. I'll give DVD Decrypter a try. Thanx for the heads up

Thanks for your sugestions. I just tried to burn raging bull, removed all menus and ripped just the main movie (DVDshrink). Burned on disk with nero approx 3.8gigs. The entire movie is perfect except the last 1/2 of the last chapter. Skipping thru to end of movie.Could it be my burner ?(hp200i)I will try to figure out how to change burn seed to 1X.

ive also come across this. Had numerous dvds which i have made backups but only a couple play up. Have made backups of the original but when try and make a copy of the backup they play all the way through on my dvd player and then freeze half way or three quarters through. What could be the problem?
All burning done at same speed 2x speed or higher.

Sorry for the delayed response. I check this board once in awhile.

I also dont think it is the media, because i have used several different types (stated above), and burnt at all different speed. From the sounds of it, i think that the problem that the original post'r is having is similiar to the problem i've had.

p.s. I have burnt at 3x several times with my Pioneer A05. It takes around 18-23 minutes. When i burn at 4x it takes around 12-15 mins.

There is NO option to burn at X3 under any firmware for the Pioneer 105 [bold]guydogg [/bold]

Please explain or elaborate as to X3 burning if you have something that nobody else knows about : )

    running sony 500a
same problem here. First problem was wrong dvdr's. it would burn most but not all the movie.changed that at mertline.com
I use smart ripper and "copytodvd". i also use dvd shrink and nero. Nero was the problem with my dvdr's and using the sony. it just screws up the chapter points.Sometimes i can fast forward and it will play, but not normally.so i quit using nero for videos.

Second problem was the firmware upgrade. once i installed the latest firmware. the old "bad" media worked! so i didnt lose 100 coasters but nero still had problems for me.
So now i use copytodvd /mydvd and dvdlab for authoring and dont have that stupid skipping or freezing anymore. So Im thinking you need a FIRMWARE UPGRADE to fix that baby! its worth a try

if every else is a no...could be the burner...how many times has it been used...it might be saying "uncle"...also, are you doing anything else while you're burning? not a good idea.

There isnt an option to burn at 3x but on some 4x mirror discs i have experienced slightly slower burn speeds than 4x, but yet not quite 2x, so who knows what speed it was at ;-)

I have had zero problems using Kyphermedia 2.4x +RW media with either dvd xcopy xpress v2.5.1 or the back up method I use, smartripper+dvd2one+nero express 5.5. They play perfectly on my Phillips and generic stand alone players. I have had about 1 out of 5 develop pixelation and freezing problems with the Kyphermedia 2.4x +R discs (long movies), although they still play well on my pc. I just ordered some more +R discs so I'm hoping to fix this problem soon. Can anyone comment on the options funtion of nero express where you can choose DVD high compatibility mode? Does this mean it can play on a wider range of set top players without problems?
my system: windows 98se, benq dw400a burner with B1HY firmware upgrade, 16x artec dvd-rom, 512mb 2100 ddr ram.

I think I fixed my pixelation and freezing problem toward end of movies for good. My method:
    1) disconnect internet, shut down all other programs using ctrl+alt+delete.
    2) rip with dvd xcopy xpress v2.5.1 in dvd rom drive.
3)ifoedit to remove/bypass warning at the beginning of the movie.
    4) burn with nero express 5.5 (rather than using xpress to burn) using dvd high compatibility setting in options. Total time between 30 to 45 minutes. Anybody else try this?

Im having much the same problem. Ive just brought the latest MSI DR4-A, and seem to be ok on short movies that require little compression but longer movies seem to skip and pixelate at the end. Im useing ICE media ive tried to find out who makes them but no luck. The last rip was ALI 150 mins and fine right upto 105 mins then after that it freezes and pixelates, yet SHREK which required no compression works fine. I use DVD Shrink for the compression (No menus or extras)And Nero 6 for the Burn at 2x. My thoughts on this is the compression ALI was compressed at around 67% so im thinking that this has somthing to do with it.

I have burnt at 3x many times, it comes up in NERO as 3x (4,140kb/sec). I have a pic, but dont have it on a site.

If someone can tell me how to post the picture in a reply, i will post a printscreen of it, for all to see.

Ive just changed the way I was burning the DVD'S and had 3 successfull burns. I slowed the burn speed to 1X and used DVD Movie in Nero 6 to burn and viola. ALI was burnt with no problems 2 hrs and 20 mins on the DVD. I think that mabey cheap media needs to be burnt slower._X_X_X_X_X_[small]http://webhost.swiftel.com.au/~vissuleth[/small]

Ive also noticed that with the cheaper media not to fill the disk all the way. This has stopped the movie jumping at the end. Ive also changed the way I do the whole process instead of DVDShrink I now use smartripper then DVD2one then burn with nero6 dvdmovie mode to finish. But be sure to change the MB's to 4300 in dvd2one to stop burning all the way to the edge.

Let me help ya out Guydogg...

I think that the burner checks the Blank media to see what speed it is. THen it burns the disk at that speed. The screenshot was taken WITHOUT a blank DVD in the drive...

Everyone seems to be asking the same question. Well here is your answer. Yes the media does make a differance. depending on which brand of DVD player. The imported DVD players from Japan are your best bet. They usually will play DVD, VCD, MP3, if you dig up one of those movies that didnt want to play or it just froze, invest 30 or 40 bucks for a DVD player at say Frys and walla. All those coasters now play perfect. Most major name brand electronics use specific laser color in there DVD players on purpose, this creates a market for various types of players. If you bought a Sony DVD player when they first came out it was great, but the new model now plays DVD-r and DVD-rw, what a gimmick. Most generic imports from japan already have this capability since they have been playing multiple formats of disk for years. The other solution would be to find the right media that will play on your DVD player, color of the media does make a difference as well as speed. Buy 1x disk it takes a little longer but I have burned over 140 DVD's without producing a coaster. That
record came to a halt when I stuck a label on the wrong side of the DVD and decided to toss it rather than peel it off.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
    Late, Dragon

I've had that a few times and now before I watch the DVD, I play it on Fast Foward 1st all the way through the movie, or sometimes even skip through chapters. Sounds weird huh? But it works.

I use cheap and expensive disks and don't get any coaters anymore :)

does anyone have the ability to change after which chapter x-copy breaks a movie into 2 discs? i don't have the ability to do that in my copy of x-copy. i have that damn skipping at the end of a first dvd all the time too. should i get x-copy xpress or something?

i have tried two different media with no difference in output.

What an interesting thread this is. I too am a newbie and have experienced skipping on my copies. What I am confused about is that I was hoping to eliminate skipping by using DVD's. I'm almost tempted to go back to XSVCD format, splitting the movie onto 2 CD's. When decrypting a DVD, when the original disk is scratched, I'm finding it virtually impossible to get a decent DVD copy. Using my XSVCD decrypting program, I can copy these, no problem (bearing in mind the XSVCD decryption process takes hours vs. minutes for DVD). Comparing the difference in time taken to decrypt, is there a way of slowing DVD Decrypter, or DVD2One Decryption, and if so, would it make a difference to the end result, eg eliminate skipping? Also, I can't see where I can choose to reduce the burning speed in Nero 6.0. I will also try DeRipper's suggestion of reducing the DVD-R size to 4300.
