I have Sky satellite at home and I also have a 2nd house that I use on occasions but has no cable wired to it.

I have a spare Sky box and was wondering is it possible to get a Sky dish to put on the 2nd house and use the spare Sky box with it?

I know sky boxes are paired with their cards but I was told that if I brought my card with me to the 2nd house, I would be able to get the Free channels like RTE, etc. Its only to kill the boredom in the evening and if I was going to stay for an extended period, I'd bring my original sky box with viewing card.

I don't want to get one of those big white dishes you see all over the place as it will look tacky, so the smaller discrete sky dish will suit better.

    What are my options?

yes, if you get a dish/lnb and just point it towards the right sat cluster (astra on 28.2E) you can use your spare skybox (without a card) to pick up the free to air channels.

citizen h are living in ireland why i am asking is i rented a house in spain which had a skydigibox and a very big dish 1.3 metres. without a card i received bbc itv 1-2-3-4 for both stations plus sky news a few free movie channels, selling channels, and a few kids chas . i also got all the radio stations bbc 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 +world service . rte , fm2 .r na g etc. when i put in my irish card i received all the stations except the subscription channels eg all sky sports -all sky movies but eurosport 1- 2 stayed on . if you go to digitalspy.com they have a very good forum dedicated to sky ps if your 2nd house is in ireland or uk then you only need the normal size dish 80 cm

the 2nd house is in Ireland...

what I am confused about is that you say you pick up channels without a sky card in your sky disgibox. I have sky satellite at home and if I remove the card, no channels come in and it says "PLEASE INSERT YOUR SKY CARD"

sorry if i misled you , the box i used in spain was an uk box but i have been told by a couple of tv dealers that the boxes are all the same . try a forced download if it does not solve the problem it wont do any harm. step 1 unplug box from mains -- step 2 press button that has BACK UP hold in while someone plugs the box into the mains and (this is very important) hold your back up button in until you get a black screen with white letters telling you that its downloading and it may take 10 minutes . when its finished it will say searching for channels , when thats finished press sky button and then see what channels you have . if you go to buy and sell there loads of guys selling boxes and cards for the fta stations ihave one in the bedroom.all you need is a duel lnb to work 2 boxes

annaville, I don't want to go messing with the sky digibox in my house with the instructions you gave me, however I've managed t source a dish so I'll set that one up on house 2 during the summer and see what channels I get

i can understand your caution , i think the force downloading instructions are in the back of digibox instruction book which comes with every digibox. i always do a download if i have been away from my house on holidays or even if i have been away for a few days. you see sky say they download any new software changes through the night but sometimes ireland is 2 or 3 weeks behind uk.for example when some new channels come on we dont always get at the same time as uk so i just help things along.
