That was very informative Remy. I appreciate all of that info. I'm not looking to play copied games. I just want to play one imported game from Japan. It's an original copy and that was my only reason for purchasing the swapmagic and the fliptop. I probably won't use the swapmagic for anything else besides this one game. Well, I'm willing to risk my PS2 for this game. I have yet to play this game but lately I've been watching movies on the PS2. It becomes unusually hot. 700124D is my version but I guess this newer one still has problems. So the ones that came out in the yellow box (70012CB I believe) were even worse?

Um, I dont think you needed the fliptop along with the Swap Magic to play your imported game if it was original.
For the slim ps2s, even when you play normal local original games it becomes unusually hot ( a bit less than modchips i guess). There are many options to fix this, USB fan, just plug a fan into the wall and direct it towards ps2, keep ps2 away from heaters, just generally keep ps2 near a cold area. But yeah overheating is a problem in the new version.

You know what, nevermind what I said. Im pretty sure Im wrong. I thought fliptops were only needed for burned/copied/fake games, but it might also be for improted originals.
    Sorry.

No, don't worry about it man. I was just going to hit myself in the head if I bought the swapmagic for nothing.

I think Geno' is right. I bought slim PS2(70006) on jan 13 2005 and the laser burned out in 5 days. now i'm getting another version. i think the main problem for laser burn is slim ps2 overheat a lot since it got no fan the previous ps2 (fat) had cooling fan but too it suffered from DRE error but no laser problem. i thnk i should get fat ps2 or wait for ps3 what do u want me to do guys?

Well I'm 26, had a Dreamcast when it first came out, and know that the new slimlines are useless at this point. Don't wait for a PS3. . . it will be until 2006 til we get our hands on it. Just go to Funcoland/Gamestop or Blockbuster and get a more stable PS2, perferably a v7 (37000 or 39000) or a v9 (50000). You can only get one used and most likely it will be from somebody that traded it in for the new slimline design.

5 days? Seriously? Gees, that's horrible. What were you doing with your PS2?

I believe that. In my opening post in this thread, one of my two friends who slimlines blew only had his for 6 days. The other had hers for 2 weeks before it fried. Neither one of them did anything to their systems (no swap magic disks or modchips) - just straight watching DVDs and playing original games.

Wow, you really did want to test it didn't you? I can't believe it's taking sony so long to fix this problem.

Kain is actually pretty smart. Its better to test it like that and find out if its going to be a problem nice and early on. That way he wont have problems if he decided to mod it.

    The 12 does not mean v12! ;-)

    new slim PStwo SCPH-7000x
    SCPH-70011 (for North America)
    SCPH-70012 (for United States)
    SCPH-70002 (for Oceania)
    SCPH-70003 (for UK)
    SCPH-70004 (for Europe)
    SCPH-70000 (for Japan)

Basically they are all the same it’s just changed by region.

ps: 4C, 4D, & 5A are date codes for these units.

Face it sony is not going to fix the problem that is the sad truth; fix it yourself, modchip or not get it fixed if you have a slim unit!

    Worried about heat eh?

Just take the board and componets out of the case, take a drill and drill holes everywhere on the case - then put it all back together - then put a fan on it. Problem solved. :)

Hi I am new here as my sons new slimline PS2 started smoking last night and then stopped working (had it 2 months). I have been trying to find out if there is a recall on some models but could only find this thread about a problem. I am waiting for Sony's headoffice to phone me about this. They said they will replace it, but my son is disabled and this is his only joy, and he is quite gutted actually.
Can anyone tell me if there is a recall and if Sony are aware of a problem with their new models?
    Thanks

I dont think sony is admitting there is anything wrong. They are replacing the broken ones at your shipping expense.

If I were you with yoru son in his situation I would get my local news team with their "consumer watch" guy on the phone. They love to get stories like this. And it will open some eyes for Sony. You should get your sons PS2 replaced a lot faster this way (so he wont have to suffer so much) and Sony will get a small slap in the face to realize this is an issue and that its effecting peoples lives.

Otherwise you will be waiting about 2 - 3 weeks for your replacement. COz you have to send yours to them, then they fix it, then they send it back. They are in no hurry to really fix it since they already got your money for the system and the games.

Let us know how it turns out.
