DVD shrink is now burning my DVD's at 1x instead of 4x. I have just switched blank DVD-Rs from TYG01's to TYG02's(not by choice but because this is what Supermediastore shipped me). I have had this problem before with other media, I have a bundle of TDK's here that say they a 8x compatable but only burn at 1x. I am using a Toshiba SD-R5112 DVD-R recorder. Note that this problem is only in the burning process. There is no speed differenct in the decryption process. Also, when the burning process does start, DVD Shrink says that is is burning a 4x but it is not because it is taking about an hour to complete the burn when it usually takes about 15 minutes. I have checked my DMA settings in Windows(2000SP4)and they are set to DMA. Also, this does not appear to be the problem because I can switch media and it will work fine. I have searched the forums I see a few issues about DVD Shrink slowing up but they don't appear to be the same situation that I have. If anybody could give me any suggestions on what I could try to do to resolve this I would appreciate it. I am ready to buy a new DVD recorder because I believe that this is more that likely a hardware/firmware issue that is unresolveable. I can't keep giving away my decent media because it is not 4x compatable with my drive. Any suggestions/insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. shawns , Welcome to the forum. Are you using Nero or DVDDecrypter to burn the DVD. It sounds like the burning program is not recognizing the Ty's properly. Have you checked for a firmware update for the burner? If the burner does not recog. the blank media as 4X or 8X then it will burn at 1X. If using DVDDecrypter make sure under Mode> iso> write the speed is set to 4X. Do the same in Nero.
Thanks for the reply, and the welcome. I am using DVD Shrink version 3.2.0.15 and it is using Nero to burn. The Nero version is 3.2.0.15. I just used a utility in Nero called CD Speed and below are the results. I think that I might try to do a backup to file using DVD Shrink and then use DVD Decrypter to do the actual burning. I'll post my results. I believe that DVD Shrink is recognizing the DVD as a 4x because it is saying that it is writing at 4x in the information box that is up during the writing process. The only setting I see in this version of DVD Shrink is a checkbox that says "Enable burning with Nero". I know that when I first set this up about 6 months ago I did not have Nero installed and it just wrote the files to the hard drive but would not burn them. Now that Nero has been installed it just burns them immediately after I put a blank DVD-R in the drive after the decryption process. I thought that I had to use Nero with DVD Shrink. Perhaps I should try a different burning program other that Nero. shawns, As you have a 4X burner I really believe this issue is w/ the Firmware although you firmware is up to date. It just does not recog. the TyG02's. I had a problem w/ Maxell disks one time. They were 4X rated but out of 25 ,8 burned at only 2X. I really think that was a bad batch of disks so I used those disks for the in-laws. If DVDDecrypter only records at 1X even though the box tells it to record at 4X then it is a firmware problem. Make sure that the burner cables are seated real well. If other media burns at 4X then your burner just does not see the code on the TYG02's properly. Only a firmware update can change that
I am having the same problem. When I first downloaded DVD Shrink and Nero, I could burn at 4x. Now it only burns at 1x. I actually bought the Nero ultra edition 6 from somewhere for $25 hoping that woul;d solve the problem, but it still only burns at 2x. I will try adjusting the speed as suggested above, but if that doesn't work, is there anything else I should do. I am using media that says it can run at 8x. Thanks. tubbie
Thanks Car.Mike, I agree with you that this is more that likely a firmware issue. Since I have the latest firmware for my burner(I think), I am probably going to just buy a new one. I will search the forums to see what models most people are having the most sucess with. I can still use the toshiba to read from so it will save me the problem of having to return to my computer to insert a blank DVD since I will then have a separate reader and writer. Tubbie, I wish that I could give you some suggestions but this issue has been nagging me for months now and I don't believe there is a resolution unless someone corrects the firmware. My only suggestion would be to stick with the same media that you are having sucess with. I know that this is hard, I tried to do the same thing but when I used all of my Taiyo Yuden I reordered the same thing and my first order were TYG01's(these worked great) and the second order are TYG02's(these burn at 1x) so it appears that the manufacturers don't get specific enough with their packaging for us to be able to ensure that we are purchasing the exact type of media. It would be probably be best to purchase a better drive if this is a possibility for you, I'm sure it will save you a lot of headaches.
