I've looked everywhere for a solution to this problem but I see the same answer..enable DMA. I've got a 16x external dvd burner using 8x media. My friend bought the exact same one. Her's burns at 8x while mine burns at 0.7x. My DMA is enabled in both the primary and secondary IDE channels. Specs: USB 2.0, WinXP (SP2), I/O Magic burner. Please Help!
It also depends on how much RAM you have and what you are doing on your comp at the time of the burn.
Hi bukwild Have another 2.0 usb port you can try it on? DMA affects internal burners not external ones (think you found that out!) How about the firmware on this drive - up to date? Closing any unneeded programs when burning w/ them? What are your system specs & make and model of the external drive? edit to add: Hey Gwen I'm the way slow one tonite
My RAM is 512MB on a P4 1.8GHz. My other comp is even more ancient, 384MB on 800MHz but both burn at the same 0.7x speed. As far as firmware its the same as my friends so I dont think it would be the problem. I actually ordered an Adaptec usb2.0 pci card because I dont trust the one I have right now (cheapo from Ebay). Interestingly though, I have a 4X internal DVD burner on my older machine and it also burns at 0.7x. The only common factor is the usb card which, up to this point, i've swapped back and forth. So I'll write back after I receive and try the new usb2.0 card. --Thanks
I would put more ram in there ... not so hard to do..... and try a different USB cable.... sometimes it's the cable!
OK..so the problem is solved. I got a new usb card and my burn speed is now at 8.03x! Guess thats why you shouldnt buy things like that on Ebay. Thanks for all your help
