Hi, Ive been having a look at a friends Lenovo Laptop as its very slow to respond and starting. I did the usual ran virus scanners and malware programs through it etc but non came up with anything alarming. We did a Ctrl+alt and delete to bring up task manager and see the performance trends and see what everything is doing and running. If you see the Disk icon its in red . Is there anyway we can find out what is causing this. Ive attached the image of this to this message. Any help who be much appreciated. Thanks Neil
The Platform is windows 10 home. See attached photo showing storage looks good. The memory is 66% so I wasnt really bothered about that. I can see AVG burns a lot of memory up , as you say. Any ideas thanks.
if the drive is just an hdd use the windows defrag utility and defragment the drive.if its an ssd perform the trim operation.
Before defragmenting, I suggest going to Accessories, System Tools and run the Disk Cleanup tool on the C:. When it says how much space it can recover, check the boxes for Temporary Files and Recycle Bin. After it finishes, reboot. Does that help? If it does, I wouldn't bother defragging, unless you want to. Elsewise, I suggest a clean boot. We can get into that later.
recovering space is a good thing but,in this case, will not do anything to speed things up.after defragging i would then do a disk cleanup tho.what exactly are the specs of this machine?at the end of the day, unless its been changed, that is a 5400rpm drive, and is pretty slow.the specs and the result of the defrag will tell us a lot.
You might be right but this thread is a year old and I would hope the problem has been resolved by now. Maybe neilcolt will see this and post what happened.
What does that mean? I did see a video unrelated to a particular thread yesterday that should have been removed. Was that here?
Hi Sorry for not getting back to everyone. I ended up changing the HDD on this laptop as we had the OS disk windows 10. After a reload on a nice clean HDD never had anymore problems. We did try a defrag but it was still extremely slow. Anyway this is sorted now and thankfully still working.
