Hi, great site! Ok, ive searched and found a ton of stuff on my problem wich is: when using dvd decrypter or dvd shrink, its encoding or decoding what ever it does, it does if very slow, Read speed is at .7x! I did everything suggested and nothing helps. I have a dvd burner that is 12x, my comp is a dell 4400 with pentium 4. with 256megs of ram and 40gb hard drive. My burner is conneced via usb. What can be the problem? Thanks!
If u up ur Ram to say 512 or higher the more the better it will really make a difference on how fast it will encode. 256 is quite low for encodeing programs.
most definitely, tranfer rate is humon diff. 1.1, which I also have, is not known for speed, works good for printers, but is slow for scanners and faxes. Plus as bowler suggested, if you can, put another stick in it, or even two at 512
@ jixxxer - by the way, welcome to AD if your talking about an external drive connected through USB 1.1, inlue of Fire Wire, then yes, you will experience an extreme diference of performance compared to an internal unit. As I had mentioned, USB 1 is not known for speed, rather for convenience, making the "Plug-N-Play" a reality with monitors,printers,faxes,etc. Besides the memory upgrade, you may also want to get a second hard drive, and check out the possibility of a fire wire connection(1134) type connection will deliver at least 4x faster transfer. So are u saying it doesnt pay to upgrade my usb to 2.0? Im not familiar with fire wire connection, what exactly is that?
Internal burners are so cheap now that it doesn't pay to get a USB 2.0/Firewire card and/or a new external burner. You're talking only a little over $30 for a nice, modern internal burner, versus $25 for a USB 2.0/firewire card and >$50 for an external drive. Even if you only needed the card, and you determined your drive supported USB 2.0 or firewire, it only costs a few bucks more to do the job right as externals are somewhat more prone to driver-related problems. One thing: Your computer and burner seem recent enough that they should support USB 2.0, which is as fast as firewire. How did you determine you are running USB 1.1 and what operating system are you using? I'm just wondering if maybe there is a missing Enhanced USB driver.
Well my computer is prolly 5 yrs old, so I assume it doesnt have 2.0, my burner is brand new ez-dub burner. I just cant imagine that it should be burning at 0.7X's with what I have. Lets say i add another 256mb of ram, do u think that will do it?
Personally, I don't think it's the problem but you really need more memory anyway and it's pretty cheap now. If you're going to crack the case open you might want to spend $20 and get a USB 2.0 + firewire card. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1567047&CatId=510 Try looking in your computer's documentation for USB 2.0 support, and also look in your Device Manager at the "Universal Serial Bus" items. Look for something saying "Enhanced". If you hae "enhanced" USB then you have USB 2.0 support. If you don't, but your documentation says your computer supports it, you have a driver or OS problem.
five years ago, when I bought my HP 520 Pavilion, USB 2.0 was not fully available, hence, doubtful your MB has it, but as suggested, internals are much faster, more reliable, and cheaper that the "round-a-bout" of external.
