hi there. im a newbie here, so i hope i got the right section to post. i am an amateur videographer and currently use Sonic MyDVD to capture my dv tapes to my pc, which saves the vids to best quality 720x576 pal mpeg2 format, which allows me to get 66 min of top quality video to a dvd-r disc. i also use arcsoft showbiz to edit my vids etc. what i want to know is when i create a project on showbiz and import say 2 mpeg vids to join together as 1 video, without editing or adding any effects, why is new single mpeg file about 10% snaller than the combined file size of the 2 original mpeg file i used to joined together. also, will the new file then have lost some quality from the original files that were used to create the new file. i hope this all makes sense, im new to this, having lots of fun, and i am trying to learn adobe premier 6.5 as well, it takes some time to get used to, but Sonic MyDVD and showbiz are ok for me at the moment, my vids are saved in mpeg2 already so no need to convert b4 burning to dvd, and MyDVD will transcode any file type anyway to mpeg2 b4 it burns it to dvd. thanks in advance for any help.....GLEN (in australia)
If mergeing files is all you need, this might help - http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/womble_mpeg_join_tutorial.cfm
hi dela. thanks for your reply, but i dont want another program just to join clips together, i got showbiz editor and sonic mydvd and adobe premier already, and i can use showbiz (very easy) to join the mpegs together, i just wanted to know why the new JOINED file is about 10% smaller than the combined size of the original vids i joined together. also, usually when i do join files, i do edit or put titles and effects etc, so thats my point in using showbiz or adobe for this sort of thing. when i capture my mini dv tapes from camcorder to pc i use mydvd to capture in mpeg2, and i store the original files in my archives (250gb ext h/drive) and i keep a copy on my backup 160gb drive on my pc to use for my projects etc. the only times i actually want or need to join 2 or more short clips together after capturing them from tape to pc is when i want to avoid having too many small files for storing in my archive. i can still use the smaller files while creating a project because they all end up being part of the final project anyway and it all gets put together as i mpeg2 file to burn to dvd. anyway, thanks again for your help, i really just need to know why the joined files are smaller as i asked in my initial thread question. regards.....GLEN
These programs probably have to re-encode to apply any effects and that would have a change in filesize!
