I can just pop in a 130 gig or 200 gig hdd to my modded xbox and then use the slayer disk to format and setup all the files needed?

is there something i am missing becides having the right bios to support a bigger hdd?

Your lucky ddp hasn't zapped you for dredging up this as your not supposed to revive old topics & instead create a new thread, come to think of it i thought archived were read only. Yep archived header says read only lol they must've missed one, in that case thumbs up from me for finding one that wasn't.
Ok first thing is do absolutely nothing, that is do not attempt any repair or deletion or file removal at all until you, have BACKED UP up C & E partition on the broken xbox, actually do a back up of the good one to. Yeah that's pretty much it.
Nothing can be done till it's determined what mod is used whether, mod chip, tsop or softmod.
You'll need a good strong beam torch. Peer through the side of the xbox that the dvd drive is on. around halfway if there's a modchip you'll see it directly behind two capacitors that are in series to the right & running parralel with the side of the xbox, the capacitors are quite tall. If all you see is empty motherboard to the left of them ,in other words nothing square hovering above it then you have one of the other mods. So long as the eeprom on partition E hasn't been deleted you'll be fine. A modchipped box won't have an issue as it can be rebuilt without one to repair C & the dash.
Ask your sons friend to come over & explain what he did or at least run through on the good xbox without changing anything or deleting to get an idea if he used a file manger app loaded on the xbox dash to change or delete file's. If all he did was change a dash skin or dash & he can remember which dash it was it will help diagnose what to do.
I make no guarantee i can help as my experiance is with modchips only, that said retrozone will be able to help if i can't.
Again i can't stress this enough DO NOT CHANGE OR ALTER OR DELETE ANYTHING for now.
EDIT: A better explanation paragraph by paragraph so as not muddle so i know what i'm dealing with.
The xbox boots then what an error code on green screen or what, a quick recording by a mobile or something then upload to yt privatized vid (send invite to me scorp NZ on yt) or a cloud site so i can see what's happening & how far you get the moment power button is pushed, this includes a flashing start button if it won't boot. you could use whatever recording device you have including web cam

scorp, I think all archived is open to be written to as that is what happens when there is no site admin around to correct the problems this site has which is a lot.

Somebody's doing something to keep the server/servers going or the forum would've gone offline some time ago.

Yes imagine the nerve of someone dredging up old threads with an on topic post. :D

Hi Scorp.. And if the box is borked for an eeprom issue.. remember Omicron1 and myself wrote a huge tutorial about how to drag the data from that.. though these days I would just find an old xecuter2.6 and attack the box with that..

I saw somebody selling a set of 10 NOS on fleabay a couple of weeks ago... for less than 1 cost back in the day.
