Hola. I stumbled upon this site while PC Hardware shopping and so far I have found a lot of the information very insightful. In my quest to build a new PC, I have decided to purchase a ASUS A8N32 Sli Motherboard and an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4400+. My intent is to overclock the processor somewhat, but not to extremes. What type of RAM would be most compatible/effective with this motherboard/cpu combo? Ive been looking at Corsair, Crucial... but there are so many different brands and types, I'm having trouble narrowing it down. I'm also confused about which types I CAN get (i.e. PC3200, PC4000... etc.) I'm guessing that as long as its 184-pin the PCxxxx doesnt matter? I was also wondering if DDR2 is only compatible with Intel systems. About all I know that is compatible so far is PC3200 400mhz DDR Dual Channel. A friend recommended Corsair XMS. Also, im looking around $300ish... I want quality but not insane pricing. Any help you guys can give will be GREATLY appreciated.
Your mobo has 4 slots and can support up to 4 Gigs of Ram. Dont get RAM that is higher than DDR400 (or PC3200) because thats the max the mobo supports. Yes dual channel is supported. So no, DDR2 is not ONLY an Intel thing. 1 Gig of RAM is sufficient for games, but if you do anything with music or stuff like music programs, I'd recommend you get more. Corsair, Kingston, and OCZ is especially good for overclocking along with Corsair.
Actually DDR2 IS just an intel thing at the moment as amds processors dont yet support it dual channel isnt ddr2 its just normal ddr running in a pair but DDR2 will be available with AMD from some time in 2006
