Hi All I am looking to upgrade my mobo and processor and would appreciate some advice on what processor would be better a socket 939 or a 754 I was looking at these 2 processors 3200+ 2.0GHz 512KB 939-pin 3200+ 2.0GHz 1MB 754-pin I was thinking the second one because it has the bigger level 2 cache, but is the 939 faster? The 939 model seems to be up to £30 dearer on some sites, and motherboards seem to be a bit more expensive, or am i looking at the wrong sites? Any help greatly appreciated
The socket 939 might be a little more expensive, but you have MUCH better upgradablilty. All the newer AMD chips, like their dual-core X-2's, are socket 939.
Hi Ive came across this deal, seems a bit expensive though, although postage usually costs £20 to where i live AMD Athlon64 3000+ (Socket 939) (includes retail Heatsink & Fan ASUS A8V-Deluxe Motherboard 1GB PC3200 RAM £260 I currently have an athlon 2200 xp with 1gig of ram and a radeon 9600se, would i be able to add what i have onto the new mobo without any more expense, i dont want to go down the pci express graphics card route, as i dont play any games on my comp, would my current psu be able to cope? Any advice greatly appreciated
I have the same proc and mobo you want. your current memory and video will fit just fine. If your psu is working with your current cpu, it will work just fine with the 3000+. I got my A8V-Deluxe mobo from refurb'd from Chiefvalue.com a few weeks ago for $50, shipped. Since it seems you live in G.B., I don't know if you can get that kind of deal, but the 3000+ is a great proc. It easily overclocks to 3500+ levels.
go with 939 pin CPU for AMD.They stopped making 754 proccessors past the 3200.The more pins the better.
Hi Thanks for the advice, i bought a AMD Athlon64 3000+ (Socket 939) and motherboard today. Got it all home and then realised it wont fit in my case (a Compaq), so its back to the shop tomorrow for a new case I'll let you know how i get on with building it all togeather
make certain you get a psu with the case as the compaq might not fit your motherboard &/or be underpowered!!
Hi I was looking at a case with a 400w psu, will this be enough? The compaq psu is rated to 250 w max, would this be really underpowered?
Check my sig. Im running a antec truepower 430 watt with dual 12 volt rails at 18 amps each. This is what you need. Im running 3 case fans....a combo dvd/cd write....cd rom...two hard drive in raid.....and a pci express card plugged right into the psu so it dont leech juice of the mobo. Plus led lights. No problems. This is all you need. And if a time comes when you need more...you can short out the compaq psu so it will kick in and then use it to just power your fans to take a load of the main psu. Just leave it outside the case.... :>
