I am unsure which method to get.
I can get a modchip for around $60AUD here, installed and loaded. Does a softmod have all the same features that are capable on a traditional modchip installation?
can you upgrade the HD through soft?

I'm not aware of all the differences. I softmoded mine and upgraded to a 320 GB HD.

modchip is the best solution, but costs money
1/ modchip like the xecuter 2.6 gives a nice blue hdd light (shows when hdd is working, great for installing games via pxxhddloader, you dont have to watch the tv to see when its finished)
2/ also has a LAN led, lets you see when PC transferred have finished
3/much easier for people with no experience to rectify a corrupt software or dash problem via an auto installer

I made an auto installer and custom menu, I install a chip for someone, run the installer
    finished
they keep a copy of the installer, never hear another thing or problem
I softmod for people, I get 20 phone calls saying theyre getting error messages.
Also, you can install emulators and all the apps you need in one click with the installer. again, without messing up

Convincing reply. I have already decided on a conventional mod chip. It is inexpensive, permanent, effortless(a pro will install it for me), and will not be problematic or erranous like a "soft mod", as stated.

I am also going to get a 250 gig harddrive to load games in. With the new Duox2 is supports larger capacity HDD than 137 gig, which is essential.

Honestly, it's personal preference and experience level. I use a softmod, and I wouldn't pay for a chip, but not everyone is able to get what they want out of it. It's definitely much easier to change out the HDD with a chip; but some of us actually enjoy the challenge, again personal preference.

    As for actual tangible facts:

In the beginnings, softmods had a LOT of problems and kinks to work out, they were plagued, but over the last few years, these problems have been completely stabilized, and the result is a very impressive feature set.

In reality, chips do have a couple extra features that soft options do not. Dual or tri bios banks, and easier Hdd options. All said and done, most people prefer the chipping option, due to simplicity. If this is your goal, go for it. There's nothing wrong with that, the actual performance is exactly equal.

    In short:

Soft=Good for individuals who either feel strongly that they can't afford a mod-chip; or for individuals who enjoy really learning about the console's format, function, etc.

Chip=Good for most people seeking a quick, cut and dry, solution that will utlimately function to the same specs and abilities, with much less effort and required knowledge.

That's really what it comes down to. They're both good, depending on your need, some people argue that soft isn't that hard; but compared to just soldering (or in some cases, snapping) in a chip and being done, soft is much more work.

Good reply. Yes, i am after the least amount of headache and problems possible. I don't want to be tinkering around too much with softmodding, i don't have the time, nor the patience. I will just get a professional to solder it on and then i won't have to worry about anything going wrong. Mod chips aren't expensive though, $70(AUD) for a DuoX2 + dash/apps/etc + free HDD installation. That is good value. When i buy my XBOX i will also purchase a 250 gig HDD, take it to the chipper and he will do the lot - chipped, upgraded and software. What more could i possibly want?
