New to all this as well. What soft mod would allow me to do these things?

Softmod Installer Deluxe 4.5 and 5.01 are the most stable. These can be found in torrents.

Chunkhead provides 4.0, a direct download. It seems stable but I've strayed away from this installer due to it being out of date. There is nothing wrong with it, works great.

How old the Softmod is irrelevant!

The version I provide is STABLE.

What can the other newer versions offer in its place?

As soon as you install the softmod, most people change the dash anyway...

Since I really don't know much about any of this I'm not quoting you on that to debate your point. I do have some questions about the version and size of some of the homebrews you have linked. The AID 4.10 you provide for example seems to be very small. The version (JDB I think the creator's name) linked me to was 1.2gigs for the regular, about 650mb for the lite, and 357mb for the update to the regular pack. Your 4.10 is much, much smaller and I'm curious why. I'm also curious about which one I should install and the differences between the regular 4.10, 4.10 lite, and your version.

Download the full version of AID 4.10. The lite version doesn't contain everything the full version has. Some dashboards are removed, the rom installer as well among other items.
