I have always seen in the forums people that have simple problems like the drive cant read this or that or that is not burning this, burning to slow etc. Most of these problems are solved very easily, lots of people ask again the same questions and again a simple answer So I have decided to do a simple guide that people with instructions that people can follow before posting in the forum, these simple recommendations could the be the solution to alot of problems with our drives:

1-Always make sure firmware is up to date.
    2-Make sure DMA is on.
3-Use high quality media(That excludes Memorex and HP).
4-Always burn at the lowest speed possible (4x should be your max).
5-If having compatibility problems with DVD+R(W) try changing book type to DVD-ROM.
6-Try using another version of your burning software or another burning software.
7-Check for viruses and other threads (like spyware).
8-Use system restore to see if the problem vanishes(Win xp).
9-If a DVD is detected as a CD-R try burning Data on it, to see if there is a real problem.
10-Check your drive specifications (I have seen some post where people ask why cant their drive burn at 8x while the specs say it can burn at 4x).

If you followed my recommendations and there is still a problem remember to put the following information when posting:
-Drive name, Firmware version, OS version, Type and Brand of disc your using, Manacfurer of disc (you can do this with DVD Identifier) and version and name of your burning software.

    I hoped It helped ;)

not really sound advice if your burner supports faster speeds and the media is rated to burn at more than 4X. for example, I wouldn't recommend burning 4X media at 12X as some burners will support it after a firmware upgrade because of the greater possibility of errors no matter what brand of media you're using but if you're burning 8X rated media at 8x write speed you should have no problem provided you're using good brands of blanks.

actually I agree with paztelu. Not alot of burners burn well at 8x, even if your using 8x media.

I only burn 8x w/ my PX 716. I always burn at 4x with my NEC 2510 and TDK 880N (retagged NEC 2500). And doesn't matter which discs I use 4x or 8x.

My nero takes about 4 hours to burn a movie. Why is it so dang slow? I just got the burner today, it is a LiteOn 16 DVD+R DL, 8X DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 4x DVD-R DL, anyways, my point it it should be a lot faster than it is. Can someone tell me why? By the way i have nero 6.6. HELP PLZ.

@Maralieus, hi. You problem could be due to a number of things; post relevant section your Nero log from c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log. What i mean by relevant is that ALL burns, good and bad are appended to this log. Edit out your serial number tho (usually begins with '1A21' or similar). This log should show up media issues, downrev firmware on your dvd burner, DMA not being set etc. Don't worry about what all that means for now, post the log and all should become clear as day..
