I've downloaded several films and tv programs. all of them are in avi format. Some of the bigger films won't play in windows media player, I get a message : Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. Are the files I downloaded useless now ?? can I get them to work ? I want to convert them to put onto a psp. The files I managed to see working in wmp I have had no trouble putting on the psp. Anyone know what I can do now ?? TIA rob
maybe you aint got the right codec for it you can always try downloading/installing a codec pack, like k-lite mega pack http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack.htm a program called g-spot will tell you whether you got the right codec for it also, but only download this if you [bold]dont [/bold]want the k-lite codec pack, because the g-spot codec app comes with it as part of the tools package you get http://www.free-codecs.com/download/GSpot.htm remember, too many codec packs can conflict,so dont get too many packs!
ok...I'm on the case of the missing codecs.....I think !! I should have read up a bit before I posted ....sorry !! I'll get back to yah if I get stuck ! rob
Thanks for that info ! I got the k-lite codec pack and they still wont play..... I downloaded AVIcodec...not quite sure what I'm looking at yet !! When I load the file name into avi codec, it tells me the v.codec name is MS MPEG4 V3, and the A1 codec name is MPEG layer-3. Anyone know what I do now ?? rob
from the start menu,go to k-lite/tools/g-spot then load in the avi it will tell you whether or not you have the correct codec installed (on the top right hand side) if it hasnt, just google for it
Thanks for the info. ! Tried it on 3 files and it says that the file type is unknown and the mime type is unknown...... They all end in a .avi so I presume they are avi's ??? what should I try next ?? rob
well boss, there seems to be a problem with the codec(s) try this link,it has lots of usefull tips on problem solving http://www.divxmovies.com/faq/#4.1
ok...done that...It now tells me it aint an avi !! If it aint an avi...then what is it ?? Is there a prog to tell me what the file is ?? Thanks for your help ! rob
