Ok, I'm sure that these questions have been asked before, but I don't have the patience right now to search through old posts.

I would like to know what type of media is best to use, rather it's for music, movies, apps, etc.

would that be -R's? or +R's?

What brands? It seems that alot of people are standing by the Ritek brand!

Also, what about being able to put printed labels on the DVD's? How would I know if I bought a blank disc that would allow me to put the labels on without the label causing problems?

Also, I just got myself a brand new
    Plextor PX-712A DVD Burner

Also, while I'm at it, anyone know who makes 12x DVD's? Can't find them online

Thanks in advance who decides to help answer my questions!

you actually got lucky, because with remarks such as those, most won't have patience to help you out.

If you're 100% determined to label your discs, then buy printable discs and buy a disc printer. Stick on labels can be too risky. Most read errors that occur on a labeled disc are easily resolved by removing the label.
Here's a thread that deals a little with labels. Don't worry it's not too long.

Everybody says that the difference from +R to -R is the hardware, that one is more reliable then the other and etc.

But do you know what is the real difference? Is the wave length of the laser? Is the amount of energy needed? One record zeros and the other ones? What is the real difference between a +R and a -R DVD?

Unlike axlman I tryed to find the information, but I never got a good answer?

    Thanks for the help.

Hey axlman, if you want to record at 12x, then you will have to use +r media. The specs on the plextor 712a is 12x with dvd+r, 8x with dvd-r. I also stay away from labels, could cause trouble. Have a good day.

Well, Thanks to everyone who has replied. It was much appreciated.

P.S. it's not that I really didn't want to search, but with so many opionions on these forums, I was in a way just trying to narrow it down a bit. Plus it was getting late!

Thanks again everyone!! Have a great day/night

Keep in mind that the faster the burn the greater the chance of error. Most never burn at over 4x.

    Hey,
I'm new to this and I would like to know if there is any good free DVD compression software available online? I have MacTheRipper, and I have ripped "Fight Club" but I cant get it on a DVD, and I dont want to spend a lot of money on software seeing as Im a poor college student.

Dvd Shrink 3.2 and DVD Decrypter will do what you want, they are both free, and they work together, and they do a great job. Better than a lot of other software that costs money.

You can get both of them here in AD.

EDIT*** you might want to mention that next time, I don't know much about Macs :>)

(Winding up in my "Flying Circus" voice - )

Because it's lazy you are ? It's OK to ask others to do for you ?

And there are no clocks where we are ?

It's late for us too, Ya know, a whole lot later by far -

We put in a full working day and then we settled down to help pple in our spare time and what do we get for our trouble ?

A lazy sod who, "don't have the patience right now to search". Ya poor thing. Why don't ya wait until you do have the time OR do you think you're intitled to "Slave labor" ? Didn't your Mum teach Ya better ?

To boot, our "poor Baby" doesn't mind telling us (Not asking at all by his tone) to "do" for him and not worry about the time so he can get on with his, "Oohhh sooo important business - "

    It's a good thing didn't come in earlier - He's put me right off my feed, he has . . . .

(Monty Python, step right in here just any ole time - )

    Hey Axlman
I notice you took the time to edit your original post. This is a comunity of folks who work to help others. Notice I said "work". If every one here just wanted the quick and easy way of doing things, then there'd be no expertise for help. By making mistakes and having problems, it forces one to truly learn the intricasies of dvd burning. If someone just tells you A-B-C you don't learn anything. We encourage folks here to learn how to do stuff. Cool huh !!!!
