Hi I was hoping someone more experienced would help me with a slight problem I am having. I have built my own computer not really knowing to much about it (just knowledge from taking apart my old comp and everything went fine and am posting from it right now. The problem I am having is a friend of mine just got a computer from someone who bought a new one but the people he got it from took out the harddrive and said thats all he needed to get for it to work. so we threw in a new hard drive and turned on the moniter..this is the problem..the monitor is on but the light from green turns to yellow and nothing shows up on the screen at all..when I remove the cord from the computer the moniter light lights up green again and says to connect the cable..and if I still connect the cable the light turns back to yellow and nothing shows up..so I have no idea really whats wrong with this and what it could be. I was thinking maybe the processor or even the mother board ..the computer seems on its running and when i hit cap lock on the key board it doesnt light up or anything so im thinking the prob maybe the mother board..anyway if anyone has suggestions to help me out i would really appreciate it. thanks
you couldnt have chosen a less appropriate forum to ask this question. if youve got computer trouble ask in the pc hardware forum not in the feedback and suggestions forum
its either the graphics card or the motherboard at fault. most likely to be the motherboard. if the pc has a graphics card then take it out and try plugging the monitor into the onboard graphics (if you have them) if you have no graphics card in the system then the motherboard is most definately broken
Could it be that they had a video card installed and now the driver needs to be rolled back to the onboard video driver?
Distorded, no as it is not booting besides which as new hd than it has no os loaded yet. Tubarao11, disconnect the data cable from the new hd to see if computer posts as possible the data cable is in reverse as in pin 1 to pin 40 instead of pin 1 to pin 1.
ddp Question: So you are saying that even if there is no OS that DOS will no show? Is that because they need to load the mobo bios first? These are real questions I am not being sarcastic. Sorry if it appears that I have hijacked this thread but I think my questions when replied to will also teach the person asking the orgional question that he might need to load the bios to the mobo.
bios runs everything til os loads so don't need an os for computer to post on screen which this computer is not doing. the bios is the permanent memory of the computer so he can't load it. also dos is an operating system as in Disk Operating System.
learn something new everyday. So it has to be a mobo problem because the first thing that loads on my computer is my display driver. So if you, never mind I will post in approiate thread. So he might need to load dos before installing an OS?
Your PC will always Post, and if it is working correctly both the video card and onboard video should work. They do not use drivers like Windows has, so you cannot install any. @Tubarao11 Did you try using another cable. It is possible that one is defective. Always try the easiest things first.
Tubarao11 if you are still there try disconecting Hard drive floppy and cd/dvd roms then try to start the computer post back your results is there any beeps comming from the computer
i remember when i put my comp together and having the bios come up before istlling windows. thanks for all the answers you guys gave i learned some new stuff and as for my friend..he bought another computer (prolly the best thing for him to do) and i guess he is happy and i can sit at my comp all day without being bothered thanks for everything all posters
i am having a similar problem with my wifes comp. it was working fine and then i tried to use it, the screen saver was locked up on the screen, no big deal i thought, its done it a couple times. i just do the ctrl alt del thing and let it reboot. this time i shut it done and restarted, now i get nothing, i can hear the hd making its normal sound but nothing works, when i unhook the video cable, the monitor gives me the response to check cable, i even change to onboard video and the same thing happens. there was quite a bit of dust inside the comp and i thought the cpu may have gotten too hot, i have cleaned all the dust out and checked all connections to no avail. i have done everything i know to do short of buying her a new unit. any help is appreciated and thanks for such an informative forum. Bryan
try turning off the computer than start again not just resetting it. also try clearing the cmos as might kick start the computer as have that worked a few times.
i have to hold in the on/off button for 5 seconds to shut it down, when i try and start i get nothing on the monitor...
about clearing cmos? the only way i know to do that is to take the battery out and i tried that. it still does the same thing. when i turn the comp on the monitor gives the message that it is in power save mode, i would get the same message briefly when shutting the comp off and leaving the monitor on before this problem started. i sure hate to buy a new computer. thanks, Bryan
try disconnecting all cables to drives. remove all cards & ram except for videocard & 1 stick of ram. reseat those 2. reseat the motherboard power connector(s). see if all can shaped objects on motherboard which are caps are flat topped & not domed. try another psu.
