I have tried 3 different burning programs, after each the songs properties say the files are only 44 bytes, this is wrong as they should be 30 to 40 MB. What is going wrong?

You simply use the wrong application to look at it.
You look the CD as a 'data disc' instead as an 'audio disc'.
Run Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/) with the audio CD in your CD-R init. Do you see something different?

That programm showed the files to the correct size, thank you. So when I right click of the file itself and view properties, how do I view it at the right size, what options in XP do I have to change?

I don't know. Maybe what you 'click' (44 bytes) and Windows sees isn't the actual file.
