Some tracks I have imported from a CD have a one second "skip", I initally imported my CD's in the default setting, got frustrated, erased 3000+ songs now I am using the mp3 setting and it is still happening. Can anyone help?

I'm assuming you mean between songs? Go to prefrences and then to Playback. Click the box of the crossfade and put it to a setting that elimnates the skip without overlapping the music to much.

No, I mean the song skips during the music. I have also checked the box that "repairs" inported tracks.

I must admit that I am not sure what firmware is, but I was given the ipod for Christmas, it is the 5G, 30GB. I used the disc that came with the ipod to load itunes on my computer. I use a PC, not a MAC.

due to my current living situation, I do not have the computer with itunes hooked uip to the internet. Is there any way to get the updates? Maybe loading them on a disc.

I would refrain from upgrading to the latest firmware as it is full of bugs. So long as you haven't upgraded since xmas, then it's more than likely you are running vers 1.0. So that also means that the firmware is unlikely to be the problem. I recommend restoring the iPod with the ipod updater that you do have. Open up the updater (START-->ALL PROGS-->IPOD-->IPOD UPDATER) and then connect your iPod. Once the initialization is complete & it has detected your iPod, restore it. Then try loading your songs on again. If you have no luck, please post back :)
