I think if it gets to the stage you HAVE to upgrade certain aspects, it doesn't fall under the category of 'console'.

Very true. The way the Sony President is speaking, you could deduce one of two scenarios (methinks ;) ):

    (a) That the PS3 will not require upgrades as it is indeed A console, not a PC, and we don't need the PC right?

    (b) The PS3 will be upgradeable and is in fact a PC of sorts, thus if we have PS3 we have a console/PC hybrid, and no longer need the PC as a solution to many of our modern day requirements.

Lets face it the way the console industry is going, by the next generation if not this one, consoles will have many of the capabilities of the PC (including word processing perhaps?), and will probably at some stage not necessarily require but rather have the option for upgrades and extensions. There is a noticeable collusion happening between Consoles, Home Theatre and PC in the Video game market at present... And I'm really unsure as to whether that is a good or bad thing. The only console not following this trend is the games dedicated Wii. This of course is leading to the lower pricing of
Nintendos consoles (adding a selling point) while decreasing their value to consumers as a jack-of-all trade unit (therefore deducting a selling point also).

I think and hope it's going to be 'optional' upgrades. E.g. if you upgrade the hard drive, you have a lot more space. BUT someone with a smaller hard drive can still play the same games as you.

Yeah. Anything that MUST be upgraded shouln't be a component integral to playing the games like the graphics chip or Ram etc. Besides which, if an average consumer with no PC know-how was to buy a PS3 for his/her kiddies, WTF is gonna happen then? Guess they'd have to pay for the installment as well (probably $60 a pop) what a rip! Sony better not do this sh!t to us consumers dude, it would be wrong. And if they do then they should give some damn notice! Imagine finding out halfway through the consoles life that you have to upgrade a component to play the new games, and then you can't afford it and you're stuck with it! At least when you buy a PC and wanna play games for it, you know you'll have to upgrade sooner or later! If they put a veil over this, then they'll lose some hardcore good will!
