I haven't seen anyone else with this problem on the net, but I'll throw it out and maybe someone has an answer.

I sent my drive into Sony because one day the tray suddenly decided to open and close continuously on it's own! Wouldn't stop! I tried to turn off the computer, wait a few seconds, and try again. The second I pushed the power button the tray was at it again.

A month later, I get the drive back. Reinstalled it and it works fine. Two weeks later, it does the funky tray thing again. What's the deal with that?

I'm guessing when it arrived at the repair place, that they popped it in some computer and it worked fine for them. So, I've had the drive out of my computer for almost a week. I just reinstalled it today and it works fine. I decided to called Sony also to find out just exactly what they did to it. I'm not great with Asian accents, so I didn't understand half of what the lady said on the phone. Something about realigning. But the sticker on the side of the drive doesn't look like it's ever been removed. How did they "repair" it?

Could this tray issue have something to do with heat? Is it a hardware problem? Is it just Sony? If anyone has a guess, I would welcome it.

Hi, I also had a problem with the tray, different to yours but a tray problem. It wouldn't close all the way.
I took the drive out shook it around a bit put it back in and it was still the same. I then turned it upside down while connected to the power and it worked perfect. Turned it the right way up, and yes it jammed halfway in again. After doing this 3 or 4 times it started to work in the upright position. I gently put it back in pc and it never did it again. Something loose inside I think, try giving yours a gentle shake or turn upside down a few times and listen if anything is rattling inside.
