My sony DRU-710A drive will burn cds but not dvds, when i run nero or dvd decrypter it will say the dvd-r is not writable and gives me a list of supported media. but says that the disc is infact a dvd-r. when i use dvd decrypter it says disc not empty. ive bought two 50 pks of dvd-r since this started happening, sony and imation brands and tried different discs from the pack and still the same. ive never had this problem before and have burned many dvd-r discs, mostly sony.
What should i do, i tried unistalling my ide that didnt help the problem.

What firmware version is on your Sony Dru 710A?

What speed rate are those sony discs? Probably 16x?

The latest firmware version for the DRU-710A is BYX5. It may need updated. Here's where you can get that update:

Firmware controls the writing strategy. Dvd media has different codes, known as MID codes. Firwmare reads these codes, and it tells your drive how to burn them. If that MID code isn't programed in your firmware-usually older drives, then it will usually kick it out during the leadin phase with an illegal disc,no disc,or similar error. Older drives, and the newer 16x media will usually call for a firmware update.

Also make sure your DMA's are set to DMA/UDMA/or either of those saying if available. Make sure they don't say pio mode.
