I am now having problems writing to this drive. I have removed and re-installed NERO 6. Drive passes CD-RW test, but fails DVD Write Tests.

    Please see NERO History errors.

    Your help is much appreciated.

    hi,

first of all, i really don't think this is a firmware problem, i've been using BYX5 since the FIRST day of it's release by Sony and have been smooth sailing since...

    now onto your REAL problems...

the reason it won't write is because your are using CRAP discs, found here:
CMC MAG is one of THE worst manufacturers of media OUT THERE in the market today, use some better media such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim...

also, you have plenty of memory, which is good, but your drive has also fallen back into PIO mode...you NEED to turn the DMA mode back ON in your drives

this can be done easily found here:

    http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking DMA.pdf

also, your nero is way out of date..newest one can be found here :

    http://www.nero.com/en/nero-up.php

    version 6.6.0.18

finally, with crap media such as the one you are using, if you insist on using this and NOT changing media, then i suggest you burn these @4x or even SLOWER since they dye CMC MAG uses is pure crap...

also, the reason for this error HERE:
is that you CAN NOT booktype a dvd-r media...only dvd+r media can be booktyped to dvd-rom~ :)

burning WAYYYYYYYYYYYY too fast on crappy media~

that is all that needs to be sorted...good luck and happy holidays...fix everything i mentioned and you SHOULD be good to go...if more probs. arise, feel free to come back and i'll help you personally~ :)

    docTY~

    Doc,

Thanks again for taking pity on a noob.

Anyways, I have made the following changes:
    1) DMA mode back on. (confirmed using NERO UTILITY)
    2) Updated Nero using pacl 1 and 2 only now is version 6.6.0.18
    3) Going to buy new media tomorrow.

Tested the drive on CD-R seems to work fine with these. Yes again crappy media (Eagle)

My quesiton is. Although I am using shitty media, would it make a difference if I had no issues using this media before updating firmware?

    Thanks again.

    Eagle media?

If you changed anything about that media-a different spindle/spindle quantity size/format,then that MID code is likely to change. It could also be a bad batch of media.

Majority of brand name media like memosux/maxell/sony/fuji/tdk/etc have many different manufacturers to make their media. This means, fuji for example- will have taiyo yuden/fujifilm/prodisc/ricohjpn/ritek as their manufacturers. The quality can vary between those manufacturers. If you were using fuji tys,and switched spindles-you may be using the prodisc or fujifilm made fuji's and don't even realize it. Huge quality difference.

Memosux/phillips/tdk/and most store brand media are notorious for using this manufacturer. Poor quality.Maxell and verbatim even have some cmags floating around in the dash format!

The poor quality media has to be burned slower and you may even have to reduce the backup target to 4300 mbs or maybe both.

If you removed nero, you may want to download this utility to completely rid all remnants of nero off your pc:

    http://www.nero.com/us/Nero_6_Clean_Tool.html

Then download nero again, and make sure you leave out the INCD packet. That packet will screw us up.

All your IDE/ATA-Atapi controllers were in pio mode. When you get around 5 or 6 burn errors in a row,the windows will revert those controllers to pio mode which is not good. That's another reason to avoid the crap media.

Edit: Damn nero cleantool links always takes two tries! LOL

    TDK quality?

I don't consider them high quality. The manufacturers for the dash are still better than the plus for TDK. I see lots of TTH mid codes in nero burn logs. I avoid TDK.

Can you slow her down to 4x?

Edit: BTW, that's a rebadged litey. Here's some info and looks like you got the latest fw update:

    Sony DRU-710A (rebadged LiteOn SOHW-1633S/1653S)
    • BY01/BY02/BY03 - stock (old)
    • BYX2/BYX3 - stock (4x +R DL and 12x -R) (old)
    • BYX4 - stock (4x +R DL and 12x -R) (old)
    • BYX4 - patched - crossflashing, multi-colored LED (old)
    • BYX5 - stock (4x +R DL and 12x -R)
    • BYX5 - patched - crossflashing, multi-colored LED (for 1213S, 1613S, 1653S, etc.)

TDK's own manufactured media SUCKS A$$~! i PERSONALLY rank them LOWER than CMC MAG...if that tells you anything~ :)

check your PM buddy, i go much more into detail there...i have to refrain from obscenities here in public threads as per forum rules, i simply DETEST TDK's own media...it's LOWER than crap to me~ :)

    docTY~

i give you a step-by-step process of changing ur burn speed lower in Nero via PM...give it a try~ :)

    Hi

I have a similar problem, but have tried everything and reckon that it's probably my CD laser which is dead (I can read/ write DVD's) but can't read or write CD's of any kind.

    a) Is there anyway of confirming this?
    b) I know it's probably not worth it, but can one repair this fault easily?

    Thanks

    hi replenish,

are you using nero to burn by chance? if so, then a nero log much like dcontendr would help us HELP YOU a lot here~ :) your problem could have MANY factors involved as you are pretty vague about it just "not working" anymore :)

give us a nero log and we can be of help to ya~

    docTY~
