I recently purchased a Sony DRU-810A. With a great sense of expectation I popped the first DVD-R into my drive and tried to write around 4 gigs at 2.4x. Result: coaster. since the quality of media was questionable I let it pass and tried again with another. Same result. this repeated itself for the next couple of dvds. I then upgraded the firmware to 1.0d and nero to 6, 6, 0, 18. finally i was able to complete the burn. This however was not the end of my problems.
The coasters continued. For the same set of files, the writing process seemed to terminate at different points. A change in media to a more reliable brand, one that noone else with the same drive seemed to have a problem with, produced no change in results. The following is a Nero log of one such failed burn:

Try updating Nero 6 to the latest version, 6.6.1.4

Please edit out your serial#. It looks like this:
    1A13-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

    [bold]Disc Manufacturer: ENGAGE - 01[/bold]

I never heard of that MID code. It may be pure garbage!

Use nero infotool to find the MID codes of all those blanks you have tried. Then post them back.

The Sony dru 810A is a rebadged benq 1640. Just has a different chip set.

Being almost a benq 1640-different firmware, try some quality plus media.Office Max has verbatim 16x on sale tomorrow. Try a pack of +16x.

When you updated nero: Did you run the nero cleantool utility?

Usually when you remove nero, remnants are left over that can cause issues. You need to go into add/remove program-uninstall nero. Then download nero cleantool6. Run the program, install nero-and leave out the INCD packet.

    Here's the link:

If you just got the Sony 810 try taking it back and getting a different one, I have the Sony 800A and had problems with it, but flashed it to KY06 and now it works great.

I have a DRU-810A and it works like a charm. Im using TDK 16x DVD+R media and burn DVD backups with it at 16x without any problems at all. I also upgraded to the latest firmware and am using Nero so I dont think the burner is the problem.

I noticed that noone mentioned that when burning Double Layer disks with this burner, you MUST use Verbatim DL disks, as no other disk seems to work. I tried several brands before contacting Sony where I was told that this drive ONLY worls with Verbatim DL disks.

Additionally, I have found that when burning DL disks with this drive, they are not readable with my other optical drive (Lite-On Combo SOHC-4832K). Single layer disks burnt with the Sony seem to work well in just about any drive or player.

All in all, I am satisfied with the drive, but if I were to do it over, I would most definately purchase a different brand.

Recommend you stick with your present version, it's bug free.

Firmware 1 version behind, update from here
    http://www.sonyisstorage.com/bv_downloads/cpce/dvd/810A_1.0e.exe

Never heard of these discs, try some Verbatim or Sony that are made in Japan

Your burner doesnt like your discs

Get some new discs as mentioned and update firmware, cheers.
