I just recently purchased this external DVD burner for my laptop because the one in my laptop only writes DVD-R at 4x and makes it extremely hot. So I got this Sony drive in order to write discs faster and keep my notebook cool. I have tried to use it a number of times and it will not write DVD-R using Nero 7 (tried Shrink also using Nero of course) nor did it work using DVDClone. However it reads discs fine. I have tried inserting discs to read into my laptop optical drive and writing with the external? No good. Reading and writing with the external? No good. The only thing that seems to work is reading with the external and writing with the internal drive. Here is the exact error I get...

I have not... But the book says it's compatible with DVD-R, and I am using Verbatims which I have never had any problem with...

Just for kicks, try a DVD+R Verbatim disc. If it doesn't write to that, then the burner my be dead, or on its way out.

Try going into Device Manager, and uninstalling the drive, then rebooting. Then try burning again.

I downloaded a diagnostic program from sony, scanned the drive and it was fine... So i un-installed my previous version of Nero and reinstalled the version that came with the drive. Just now used the same DVD-R disks I tried before, pulled up DVD Shrink and burned a copy no problem!! Thanks so much for your help!
