Hi all, i am seriuosly considering my first (and last) dvd recorder, the top of the range Sony jobbie catches my eye more than any other at up to £500 .......... with 160gig hard drive, dual layer capability and freeview and lots of other goodies, has anybody else got one ?, any reviews anywhere, there doesnt seem to be anything else to touch it. any recomendations anywhere my friends ?, where is the cheapest place to get one, i am in the UK tim
The Sony DVD recorders aren't worth the cash ... Get a Pioneer, a JVC or a LiteOn ... they're all much better than the Sony units ...
Agreed If you want this purchase to be your last --- Good Luck ---But starting out with a Sony will most definately not be your Last. Please don't consider a Sony the Top of the Range
agreed i bought a sony dvd recorder model GX-315 and it works great other than the Fact i can't record anything from hbo or premium movie channels after a few seconds of recording it stops and tells me it can't record copy protected materials. wich i dont care cause i dont record much from this channels anyway, i usually record all my fav tv shows from local channels. so if you looking for a good machine, this one is a good one except for what i explaine, if someone knoes of a patch that i can download and run in the machine to fix that, let me know,
fair comment lads, i dont know why i am so keen on Sony stuff, the other makes seem to be just as good. tim
[ irongiant ] I don't belive you will find a patch [hack] for your unit. Some users have reported success with add on units to defeat MV Myself, I do not have much/any faith in them. There are other forms of CP besides MV
"Get a Pioneer, a JVC or a LiteOn" but how do i find out which is the best of the bunch when you take away SONY ?????, should i consider LG as well ?. tim
You can consider any brand you wish ... ... the way to find out for sure which unit is the best of the bunch and most suitable for what your needs are is to buy all of the units and test 'em out I know that the LiteOn can be had for $125, which is considerably less than the others ... ALL DVD RECORDERS WILL HAVE PROBLEMS UNIQUE TO THE PARTICULAR RECORDER THAT YOU OWN This is something that you'll have to live with unless you want to buy a SVHS or something ...
None of the new recorders will allow recording copy protected shows, like the Sopranos, movies, etc. You can buy a picture stablizer on the net that will help improve the signal...oh ya it also removes the macrovision signal that prevents making a copy.
well i don't know why HBO has a copy protection on their broadcast, i just find out, Showtime does'nt have this copy protection, like i explain above, my GX315 wont record from HBO, just a few days ago My landlord change the programing adding Showtime to the movie channels and my machine records from showtime and all the others except HBO, oh well, not a biggie, i still Love my machine. i recomended.
yea, i guess if i really wanted to record from HBO i can get the video stabiliser described above, but truth is i hardly watch HBO,most the my favorite shows are on local networks. but if you know of a hack for the sony please do share.
My Sony GX-300 recorded everything and anything; my GX-315 will not record the majority of the premium channels. Of greater importance tho is the turtle like speed of the 315...finalizing a disc always takes over 5 minutes; my 300 did it in 1+ minute and my ancient Philips does it in 45 seconds. Formatting with the 315 is slow too. And, I tried a 2nd machine from another store and the same results. When I reported it to Sony they denied any knowledge of this problem but agreed a new model should be at least as good as its predecessor. Overall DVD recorders are getting smaller and cheaper and chincier and don't forget...Sony is in the film making business! For me if you can find an older Sony (gx-300) or Philips (at a reduced price) buy it. Chances are it will work OK, finalize/process discs as fast as anything new and the copy guard won't exist. As for my 315, I'm probably going to sell it...or "encourage" Sony to take it back. It's the worst Sony product I've ever purchased.
Hi I do agree with you on that about the sony 315, the unit i had before was a panasonic, i had no problem recording from premieum channels, only problem i had the unit only record to dvd-r/rw media, and all the blank media i had was dvd+r, so the other day i was at the local best buy store and i saw the new and improve panasonic model,Model: DMR-ES15S wich records and plays dvd-r/rw dl/ and dvd+r/rw dl and dvd ram. and now im kicking my self in the ass for not waiting lol.
